“You acted as though you were a good distance away.”

“I was on my way.”

No crap, Einstein.

Moving toward my dresser, I ignore him in my personal space. He’ll observe my sanctuary and probably cast another opinion on what kind of girl I am.

I can sum it up for him if he wants to save himself some time.

I’m simple.

White comforter, four fluffy pillows, emerald green walls to match my Earthy astrological sign and books. A full wall shelf of them with every single story I’ve enjoyed over the years and more.

If he looked into my closet, I have more paperbacks than clothes.

“I’ll just be a second,” I tell him, pulling out a few t-shirts and, as discreetly as I can, some underwear and another bra. “Make yourself at home.”

He doesn’t utter a word, and I try to disregard whatever it is he’s doing. It makes no difference what Reid thinks of me. It’s not as though he’s going to be a lifelong friend. The moment his time is up, he’ll probably run back to his team and forget to say goodbye.

Plucking some leggings and a pair of jeans from my drawers, I start gathering up a few new books that I picked up last week.

“What are you doing?”

I glimpse over my shoulder to find that Reid has removed the hood from his head and is staring at me with a confused bearing along his face. “Packing…”

“Books.”

Right.

I nod and wait for the punchline, but nothing comes his way. “You’d be correct, big man.”

“How many can you read in five hours?”

Good question.

I contemplate that for a second before saying, “Depends on how good it is, I guess.”

Reid averts his eyes, observing the rest of my room while I neatly load up my duffle bag. But when I move back toward my bookshelf, Reid’s not done giving me his two cents.

“You’re grabbing more?”

A nervous-amused chuckle forms in my throat, and I hit him with a bemused smile. “What is wrong with you? Of course, I’m grabbing more. Do you think this is a game?”

Reid stares blankly at me, and it makes sense that he wouldn’t get it. The only thing he probably reads is hockey stats.

“Almost five hours there,” I explain. “And five hours back. Then there’s the time in the hotel.”

“We won’t be spending much time there,” he tells me. “With the way my teammates are, we’ll probably be out.”

Fair.

“Okay.” I put back one book and turn to pack the rest.

“That’s barely making a dent in it, Shorty,” Reid scolds. “You don’t need all those.”

“You don’t know me,” I reply haughtily with a little lift of my chin. “I’ll finish all these by the time we’re back.”

“You’re not gonna read at the game.”
