“No pineapple, please,” she says. “I can’t do it.”

“You a pepperoni only girl?” I pull my cell out of my jeans to give me something to solely keep my focus on and search for the closest pizza joints.

“No, I can be adventurous.”

“But you won’t try pineapple.”

Hollyn sits along the shorter end of the couch from my peripheral, and I dare not look at her legs that she just pulled up to her chest. “Fine, Reid. Try me.”

Girl, I definitely want to try you.

“I don’t do pineapple,” I deadpan, finding a local mom-and-pop pizzeria that’s not too far from here.

Hollyn chuckles, and the sound seems to calm my nerves a bit. “Alright, well then, maybe you can help me with Weston then.”

And we’re back.

My shoulders tense as my thumb hovers over, adding toppings to our pizza. Again, I’m not sure what got lost in context, but this woman is wasting her time on a dude who doesn’t deserve it.

“What for?” I press, clicking on pepperoni, ham, bacon, and Italian sausage.

“I don’t know how to bring up going out together.”

I sigh but it comes out through my inaudible exhale. “You’re not supposed to be asking him shit.”

“Why? Are you old-fashioned and believe the men should make all the moves?”

“No.” I think he’s not going to be something to keep your attention long. However, a deal is a damn deal, isn’t it? “What’s the last thing he said?”

“If I could show up a half hour early and then stay after you leave.”

I fight back the roll of my eyes and flick them over to her.

I shouldn’t have.

Her thighs are exposed right to her hip. The fabric of her shorts rode up to her silky-smooth-looking skin, and if Weston was looking at what I was currently, he’d do more than take her out on a date.

“Tell him no,” I reply, then go back to my phone to add wings.

“No?” she repeats. “Why would I do that?”

“You’re not his bitch, Shorty. He needs to understand that your time is precious. That you’re an independent woman who has other things to do than pick up his slack.”

“But he needs me.”

No, he doesn’t.

He’s just lazy as hell.

“Do you think it’s chivalrous to have a woman work harder than a man when he’s sitting in an office somewhere? Don’t you think he’d want to do more of the work?”

“Yes, but—” I cock an eyebrow and Hollyn shuts up.

“Tell him I’m taking you to New Brunswick again and leave it at that.”

Hollyn’s blue eyes narrow. “What’s that going to do?”

“Make him think we’re getting closer.”
