“And that makes me not normal?”

“Yes,” I assert. “You’re floating in money, and no one like me is going to do that. I would rather sit on the floor until they fixed it back to how it was than pay that sort of money.”

“That’s kinda a waste of time, don’t you think?”

“Not for eight hundred sixty dollars and three cents.” Reid looks heavenward as if I’m being crazy, but it’s the principle of the matter. “I’m not talking out of sorts here, Reid. Tell me I’m wrong.”

“You’re not wrong,” he divulges. “However, you still weren’t gonna win.”

“I won’t accept that.”

He lifts his shoulders. “You don’t have to because it’s handled.”

My nostrils flare in fury as I stomp off toward my car because arguing with him is going to get me the same results as arguing with a wall.

Nothing.

I’m in debt for something I didn’t want to owe and that means that Reid is going to have to still deal with me in installments for what I need to repay.

“Don’t get upset, Shorty,” Reid says to my back. “It’s fine.”

It’s not fine. This is beyond stupid, and I hate the fact that I’m in the red with him, or anyone else for that matter.

I guess debt does that to some people.

Me? It sends me over the edge because it wasn’t what I expected walking in here and I certainly will raise hell for this mishap.

“Shorty.” Reid’s palm finds the edge of my car door, and he keeps it there so I can’t open it. “Look at me.”

Leave me alone.

It’s what I want to say. Why this man thinks it’s okay to pay other people’s bills is beyond me. I didn’t need the help. It wasn’t like I couldn’t do it myself. I’m embarrassed, and all I want to do is go home, watch crime shows, and eat ice cream.

“Woman…”

With lips pressed together, I glance up at the tower of man at my side and glare up because he wants to talk, so let him. I’m not going to appease him with an answer.

“I didn’t do it because I thought you needed help. You’re independent as hell, and I respect the shit out of that. Call it because we’re friends.”

“We’re not friends,” I rebuke sharply, instantly wanting to take it back the moment it leaves my lips.

It’s not his fault, but I’m sure acting like it is.

“Well, shit,” he mutters, shifting his position and stepping closer to me. “If that’s not the case, then I guess it doesn’t fucking matter if I do this then.”

It all happens so fast that I don’t initially realize his mouth is on mine until his lips move.

I’m embodied in this kiss without a second thought. My brain freezes on any other thought besides what he’s doing. I don’t push him away or tell him to stop.

In fact, when my eyes crack open, his are closed.

His are closed.

I don’t know why I thought they’d be open, too. Maybe because it’d mean this doesn’t mean anything. That all he was doing it for was to get me to shut up.

However, when he coaxes my mouth wider, I’m only too eager to oblige and allow him to do whatever it is that he wants.

I’ll never relive this moment.
