Aiden saw that I still looked doubtful, so he said, “We might get a chance to ask Sully about Trevor again when we go over there with Annisa.”

“That’s true.” My voice lifted up in volume as I thought about the opportunity to question Sully. Speaking of Annisa, my phone buzzed, and her name appeared on the screen.

“Hey, Annisa,” I said when I swiped on the call.

“Are you guys behind me? I can’t tell.”

“Not yet, but we’re on our way now.” I looked upward and gave a silent prayer that I would be patient.

In response, Aiden started the engine and pulled the car toward the road. We passed the coffee food truck, and the guy at the window gave us a long look as we drove by. I stared back, wondering why he was giving Aiden and me the stink eye.

“What’s up with the coffee guy?” I asked, turning my head around to look at the man in the window. He had poked his head out to follow Aiden’s car.

“What guy?” Aiden asked. Although he kept his head straight, he flickered his eyes at the rearview mirror to check out the man.

“Doesn’t he look like he’s glaring at us?” I didn’t turn my head around, but I kept my gaze on him through the rearview mirror.

“I don’t know. Maybe that’s how he looks. Anyways, why would he glare at us? I’ve never met the man, so I don’t think he has anything on me. Maybe he’s looking at you.” Aiden winked when he said the last part, so I knew that he was teasing.

“What are you guys talking about?” Annisa’s voice came out from the phone in my hand. I had forgotten that I was still on the call with her. Oops!

“Nothing. It was just the guy at the coffee food truck. I was telling Aiden that I thought he was looking at us funny when we were leaving the beach parking lot.”

“Oh, that guy!” Annisa’s response was choppy because it sounded like she was talking from her car’s speaker, but there was no mistake in her tone. She sounded unnerved.

“Did he give you a strange look, too? Do you know him?” I was surprised that she had any opinions on the coffee vendor.

“I don’t know him personally, but when I went to buy a cup of coffee after the police interviewed me, the guy went off about scuba divers.”

“Perhaps he just doesn’t like divers,” Aiden responded, joining in our conversation.

“Whatever. From the way he spoke about the diving group, he seemed glad that a diver had died,” Annisa added.

“Are you sure about that? Because he was quick to help,” I said, recalling how the coffee vendor called for the ambulance when no one else had their phones with them.

“No, but it seemed that way.”

I groaned and thought, Annisa has no idea what she’s talking about. I was going to say something snarky, but then Julia’s warning flashed in my head. Be nice.

I agreed with the imaginary Julia in my head.

“Anyway, that’s terrible. No matter what someone thinks of divers, there’s no reason to be happy that someone died,” I said.

“True.” Annisa’s voice was impatient. “Listen, I wanted to make sure that you guys were still coming to the police station with me,” she added.

“Yes, we’ll catch up with you soon,” I answered and ended the call. I knew this was true because I could see the back of her red BMW. As we followed Annisa the rest of the way to the police station, my mind wandered to Trevor.

Annisa’s admission that he acted illegally made me wonder what other shady deals he was involved in.

“Sully claimed he didn’t know that Annisa hired Trevor as her private instructor, but don’t you think that he would be suspicious or at least wanted to check the paperwork?”

Aiden tensed. “If he didn’t think there was any reason to doubt Trevor, I don’t know why he would question him.”

His answer made sense, but it was troubling that there wasn’t any oversight between the dive shop owner and the independent scuba diving instructors.

There wasn’t time to ask more questions because we had arrived at the Monterey Police Department. I glanced out my window and saw Annisa looking at us. She was waiting in her car for us to get out. I put up one finger to indicate that we’d be out in a minute.

“What’s our plan?”
