Officer Shin nodded. “Cream and sugar?”

“Black is fine,” I said, and Aiden raised a hand, indicating that he wanted the same.

With our coffee orders taken, Officer Shin backed out into the hall and closed the door.

I scanned around and observed that room three was a small interrogation room. It was exactly like what I saw on TV. There was a small table in the middle of the room, but what I focused on was the two-way window.

I got goosebumps thinking that we might be observed by an unknown person, and knowing that our conversation was being recorded didn’t help lower my blood pressure.

“Hello, Officer Frankel,” Annisa said when she saw who entered the room. She started to give him her special smoldering smile but stopped short when she saw his stern expression.

“Miss Choi, you’re under arrest. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law…”

My jaw dropped when I heard Officer Frankel read Annisa the Miranda warning. However, that was nothing compared to Officer Shin’s reaction when he heard his partner arrest Annisa. In complete shock, he dropped the two cups of coffee he brought back for Aiden and me.

“What’s going on?” Officer Shin asked, forgetting about the spilled coffee.

Chapter Eleven

“Yikes!” I cried out. The hot liquid quickly spread everywhere, including under the table where the three of us were sitting.

I jumped out of the chair, not wanting to get our shoes wet, but Aiden remained seated.

Ignoring the coffee on the floor, he narrowed his eyes. “Why is Annisa being arrested?” He quickly went into his attorney mode.

“We have evidence that Miss Choi was at the scene when the crime was committed,” Officer Frankel answered tersely.

“Of course you do. Don’t you remember she came to talk to you and Officer Shin about meeting with Trevor before the dive started?” Aiden asked, looking puzzled.

“We have new evidence.” Officer Frankel met Aiden’s gaze with his own intense look.

“What evidence?” Officer Shin furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. He had stepped out to find someone to mop up the spilled drinks, so he didn’t hear Aiden’s question. But, he had come back in time to hear that there was new evidence against Annisa.

“We already questioned her at the scene, and she came here on her own to volunteer more information about the victim,” Officer Shin said. He looked like he was going to argue further, but his partner cut him off.

“I’ll fill you in after we process Miss Choi,” Officer Frankel said impatiently. They locked gazes for a few seconds, but then the two of them shared a look of understanding.

My eyes went back and forth between the officers and Aiden. It was like watching a tennis match. “Excuse me, what’s happening?” I asked.

“The officer believes there’s evidence connecting Annisa to Trevor’s death, so he is arresting her,” Aiden explained, not looking at me. His arms were crossed, and he was frowning. I knew this must be serious, and given the fact that he didn’t try to argue with Officer Frankel further, he must’ve thought that the police had strong evidence.

Meanwhile, Annisa was sitting down with her legs crossed, swinging her top leg and looking amused as though she was watching a TV drama unfold.

When Officer Frankel stood in front of her, she was taken aback.

“What are you doing?” Annisa yelled when he brought out his handcuffs to put on her wrists. Her eyes widened as she started to realize the seriousness of the situation.

“You’re under arrest. Didn’t you hear me reading you your Miranda rights?” Officer Frankel sounded annoyed.

“Yes, but I didn’t think you meant me.” Her eyes grew larger. “I mean I didn’t think you were going to actually arrest me,” Annisa spluttered, getting angry.

Officer Frankel raised an eyebrow and gave her a look that said, Are you kidding me? His lips twitched, trying to bite back a sarcastic remark.

Annisa leaped from the chair. “Claire, you have to do something! I don’t want to go to jail.” She came over and frantically reached for my forearm. When she got a hold of my fleece jacket sleeve, she bunched it up in her hand in a tight grip, jerking me toward her.

My arms shot forward as I tried to stay balanced. “Whoa!” I cried and grabbed onto Annisa’s arm. She clasped her hands over mine to steady me. When I looked up, I saw desperation in her eyes, and her breaths were quick and shallow.

“We haven’t been the best of friends, and you don’t have a good reason to believe me, but I swear to you. I didn’t kill Trevor.” Annisa paused after each word in the last statement, deliberately letting the message sink in.
