“Why would she do that?” Julia’s look turned from hurt to confusion.

“Well, she would’ve failed if Trevor didn’t sign off on the paperwork. She was having trouble completing the emergency ascent without air, and she had to take the spare regulator from him as they came up.”

Julia nodded in understanding at the required underwater skill, but she was shocked that Annisa would ask her instructor to falsify the paperwork.

“I don’t know what to say.” She shook her head. Her pale face stood out against the black sweater she had on.

“Were they still seeing each other?” Tristan asked. Unlike Julia, he didn’t seem shocked by Annisa’s behavior. In fact, he had a sardonic smile on his face.

“No. Although I didn’t know it was Trevor at the time, I heard Annisa arguing with him before he was found dead.”

“What were they fighting about?” Julia asked. She suddenly perked up with interest.

“Trevor wanted to know why Annisa hadn’t called him back after their date. That’s all I heard because I didn’t want them to catch me eavesdropping. Later on at the police station, Annisa admitted that she didn’t call Trevor because he wasn’t her type,” I said, still mystified by Annisa’s answer.

“Type?” Julia looked at me questioningly.

“I don’t know what she meant by that because Trevor was tall and good-looking.” I shrugged as if to point out that all the guys Annisa liked fit that stereotype.

“Wow, I don’t know what to think.” Julia leaned against her husband, and Tristan wrapped his arms around her protectively. She seemed blown away by what she heard about someone she thought she knew well.

“I just thought of something,” Aiden said quickly with a troubled look on his face.

“What?” Julia, Tristan, and I said simultaneously.

Seeing Aiden’s eyes widen in alarm, the blood in my head pulsed.

A bad feeling crept over me, constricting my throat and making it hard for me to talk, but I managed to say, “What are you thinking?”

“I can’t believe that I didn’t think of this earlier,” he said, scrunching his face in irritation.

We looked at him expectantly. “Don’t keep us in suspense,” Julia cried out.

Looking squarely at us, he said, “The fact that Trevor falsified the records is a motive for Annisa to kill him.”

Chapter Fourteen

The receptionist’s keyboard clicking filled my ears as I stood rooted to the floor.

“How can that be a motive for murder?” Julia asked. Her biting tone chastised Aiden for claiming that her friend had a reason to kill someone. Julia’s loyalty seemed to be misplaced, but looking at her pursed lips, I wasn’t going to argue.

Aiden didn’t take offense at Julia’s outrage and calmly said, “Think about it. Annisa and Trevor knew that what they did wasn’t right even if they didn’t know what law they were breaking.”

“It wasn’t ethical for sure.” Tristan nodded in agreement but winced when he saw Julia’s withering glare.

“Come to think of it, maybe when Annisa had a chance to think about what she had asked Trevor to do, she regretted her action, and well, she decided to do something about it,” Aiden said, speculating on her motive.

“Even if what you’re saying is true, how did she do it? There was no blood or weapon found near Trevor’s body,” I said.

Aiden threw up his hands and said, “I don’t know. That’s the million-dollar question. The police haven’t told us how Trevor died, and frankly, we won’t find out today because they need to wait for the ME’s official report.”

“Maybe it’s a coincidence, but doesn’t it seem bizarre that Annisa came here to report the very detail that could be used against her? I just can’t see her agreeing to come here if she killed him,” I said.

“I agree with Claire,” Julia said firmly. “Annisa didn’t kill Trevor.”

Aiden frowned. “Yeah, I don’t like the way this looks, but until I get a chance to talk to her, I think we should all keep this information to ourselves unless we are specifically asked about this.”

He ran his hand through his hair, and I wondered if he regretted his decision to help her. I know I was having second thoughts.
