We walked into the coffee shop, and the whirl of the coffee machine was complemented by the acoustic music playing softly from the speakers. This would’ve been really relaxing if I wasn’t so anxious to hear what Will had to say.

“What can I get you guys?” a barista with electric blue hair asked. The shade was bright, but it flattered the young man behind the counter.

“I’ll get a caramel latte,” I said and stepped aside for Julia to order.

“I’ll take a soy chai tea latte,” Julia said and looked to Tristan.

“I’ll just have a small black coffee,” Tristan said.

“I’ll have the same,” Will said, taking out his wallet to retrieve his platinum airline credit card to pay for our drinks.

“Thanks so much!” Julia and I said simultaneously, and Tristan clapped his friend on the back.

“It’s the least I can do for dropping the bomb outside,” he said and slipped the card back into his wallet.

While we waited for our drinks, I snuck a glance at him. When we first met, I assumed that Will worked with Tristan. Now, I wondered what line of work he was in. Was he an attorney like Aiden? Or maybe he was a detective with the San Francisco police force.

“Drink for Will,” the barista called out.

“Ooh, this looks yummy!” I cried out, reaching for my drink.

“And look at the pretty design.” The recycled paper cup didn’t have a lid on it yet, and Julia was pointing to the leaf design the barista had made with the milk foam.

The barista smiled in thanks as he worked on the next drink.

“I’m so jealous of you guys,” I said when I picked up my cup.

“Why?” Julia asked. She raised an eyebrow at me and crossed her arms across her chest.

“Your new apartment is so close to all these fantastic coffee shops and restaurants,” I said, waving my free hand vaguely toward the entrance.

“That’s true,” Will acknowledged. “In fact, there’s a great Lebanese restaurant two blocks not too far from here. Plus, a Tapas Bar is supposed to open next month.”

“That’s it. I’m moving in with you guys when you bring Grumpy,” I joked.

“You know you’re welcome to stay with me anytime.” I knew Julia was earnest in her offer, but there was no way that I was going to move in with the newlyweds.

“Here are the rest of your drinks,” the barista said and placed Julia’s drink with the two black coffees on the counter. Like my latte, Julia’s soy chai had a decorative leaf on it.

After we got our drinks, we found a table by the back that looked like it would provide us some privacy while we talked. I was burning with curiosity, but I waited until we settled in.

Before I could ask Will what he was working on, Julia said, “Now that we have our drinks, you’ll have to fill us in on what you told us.” Resting her elbows on the table, she leaned forward with an intent look on her face.

Will nodded. “Did Tristan tell you that I work for the FBI?”

“I thought you were a lawyer,” Julia said. Her mouth formed an O in surprise. That was my initial guess, too.

“I am, but I’m an attorney for the FBI.”

“Is that why you missed our wedding?” Julia’s eyes grew larger as she figured out his absence from their wedding.

Nodding, Will said, “Yeah, I was at my training at Quantico, and I didn’t want Tristan to tell anyone just in case I got washed out.”

“That makes a lot of sense,” I said and took a sip from my latte.

“You’re an agent now,” Tristan said, looking proudly at his friend.

“Wait a minute. Are you even supposed to tell us that you’re an FBI agent?” Julia asked.
