“What do you think?” On one hand, we didn’t have the owner’s permission to enter the room. On the other hand, the owner was deceased and couldn’t come after us if he was angry.

Julia saw me hesitate, so she asked, “Are you afraid to open the door?”

“No, that’s not it. I was wondering if we should be here going through Trevor’s stuff. What if we find something personal?”

“Like what?” Julia looked puzzled at what kind of personal things people would keep locked up in a storage unit.

I shrugged. Without any other reason not to enter the unit, I turned to Julia and said, “Well, here goes.” I turned the handle and pushed the door open. Nothing flew out at us. I let out a relieved sigh. I pushed the door wider and saw that a big white sheet had been draped over something.

“What do you think is under there?” Julia stood on her tiptoes. She craned her neck and moved her head from side to side to get a better look over my shoulder. I was only five feet and five inches tall, but I towered over Julia’s small five-foot frame.

“There’s only one way to find out.” I stepped into the closet and turned on the light by the door. There were some lumps under the sheet. When I reached down to grab a corner, I didn’t see any dust on it, so whoever put the sheet here must’ve done so recently. I looked back at Julia, who had taken my spot at the doorway. “Here goes.” With a flourish, I lifted the sheet up.

“Whew.” I whistled when I saw the scuba diving equipment stacked on the floor. I bent down to take a closer look at the gear.

“Look at this!” I held up a brand-new boxed GPS dive watch. I put the box down and picked up another. “This is a diving light.” I set it down and glanced at the rest of the boxes, taking a quick inventory of what was down here.

“It looks like Trevor used this place to store the small scuba diving equipment while he used Annisa’s place to keep the larger and more expensive stuff.” I stood up and walked to the entryway.

“Does it look fake or stolen?” Julia inquired. She didn’t come in to look closer but stood guarding the door.

“I don’t know. As far as I can tell, it doesn’t look fake, and I wouldn’t know if it was stolen unless we involve the police.”

“Didn’t Will tell us that he was working on a case of stolen goods?” Julia brought up her husband’s friend.

“That’s right. Maybe we can ask him, but for the time being, we should lock up. Plus, it’s almost time to meet Aiden and Annisa at Sully’s.”

“Let’s keep the information about Trevor’s storage unit from Sully until we ask Will about it. I got a weird feeling from Sully when he handed me the key to Trevor’s apartment.”

Julia nodded and said, “We can put the storage key back where we found it when we go back for Leo.”

With one final look at the boxes, I covered them with the sheet and turned off the light. Once the door was locked again, we walked back to the entrance.

“I don’t know what I was expecting, but I thought we would find—” Julia paused, trying to find the right words.

“A dead body,” I filled in.

“No, silly. Not that!” Julia smacked me on the arm in annoyance. “I thought we would find some information that would give more insight into what kind of person Trevor was.”

I thought about that and answered, “Yeah, it woulc’ve been helpful, but sometimes, you have to take what you can get.”

We arrived at Julia’s parked car, but before I got into the vehicle, I said, “Listen, before we go to Sully’s, we should meet up with Aiden and Annisa first. I want to talk to Annisa beforehand, and we should decide what we’re going to mention or not mention to Sully.”

“I agree. Text Aiden to meet us at Fratelli’s.”

“Oooh, I like that idea.” I grabbed my phone and typed out the short message.

Meet us at Fratelli’s before going to the dive shop?

The thought of eating Fratelli’s famous clam chowder in a bread bowl lifted some of the uneasiness I felt about what Julia and I had discovered so far. I just hoped that Aiden wasn’t already at the dive shop.

Julia pulled out of the parking lot, and we started to drive the short distance to the restaurant.

Although it didn’t seem like we discovered much, it seemed suspicious that Trevor was hoarding diving equipment when he worked at a dive store. Was he stealing Sully’s merchandise? What was he planning to do with all those items?

Ping.

It was a text from Aiden.
