“Here, sit down.” Tristan grabbed me and steered me to a chair.

“I’m sorry. It just hit me what was happening,” I muttered.

“Take some deep breaths.”

While I was breathing, I noticed Will come out of Annisa’s room. I was going to say something, but he caught me looking and gave me a slight shake of his head. He put one finger in front of his lips, signaling that he didn’t want anyone to pay attention to him.

I wondered if anyone else noticed Will when Officer Vega and her partner returned.

“We spoke with the Monterey Police, and Officer Frankel requested that you come down with us so that they can speak to you when we meet with them.” Officer Vega pointed at Julia and me.

“I’m Julia’s husband, so I want to come with her.” Tristan reached for Julia’s hand.

“Fine,” Officer Vega said. “We’re heading out, but we have the bedroom taped off. Don’t go in there. I’m going to wait outside for the ME to get here, and when he does, we’ll head down to Monterey. We expect you to follow us shortly.” She gave us a look that left no room for questioning.

“It sounds like the officers have things in control, so I’ll head back to the office,” Will said. He had joined us before anyone noticed that he had wandered off.

“Please leave your name and contact information with Officer Miller before you go,” Officer Vega said and motioned to her partner.

While Will was talking to the police officer, Derrick turned to me and said, “I’m so sorry about this, sweetie.” He patted my arm gently.

“We’ll stay here, but let us know if you need anything,” Eric said, and it reminded me that Trevor’s cat was still here.

“Will you guys watch Leo?” I asked.

“Who’s Leo?” Will asked after he had finished giving his information to Officer Miller.

I swiveled my head around to see if I could spot the feline, but the cat was nowhere to be seen.

“Leo? Leo?” Julia and I called out for him. Pretty soon, we had a search party calling out the cat’s name.

“I see him. He’s over there.” Tristan pointed to the space between the ceiling and the top of the wooden cabinet.

“How in the world did he get up there?” Julia asked.

“Leo, come on down!” I tried to cajole him, but I didn’t have any enticing treats, so the cat stared at me balefully.

“Let me see if I can get him,” Will said, and he went to the counter. He hopped up gracefully and stood on the marble counter.

“Be careful,” I warned, but it was unnecessary. Will scooped Leo with one hand while holding onto the cabinet with the other.

“Here, will someone take Leo?” Will squatted down, and Julia lifted the cat into her arms.

Instead of coming down, Will straightened up. He took out a plastic glove from inside his jacket and put it on before he reached up to grab something.

From where we were standing, we couldn’t see what was hidden by the wooden lip of the cabinet.

“What is that?” Tristan asked.

Will didn’t answer right away as he was reading a document, but he finally responded. “It looks like a lease to an apartment. There’s an address. It looks like it’s in Pacific Heights.”

Will named a posh area of San Francisco that was known for its high-end fashion boutiques and restaurants.

“Didn’t Annisa say that she was looking for another place to rent because she didn’t want Trevor to know where she lives?” I asked Julia.

“Yes,” Julia said. Grimacing at her curt tone, I switched my attention to Will.

“Are you going to give the lease to the police?” I asked when he took an evidence bag from inside his coat.
