When she got a hold of the material, she pulled him into her. Then, she threw him over her shoulder, and he crashed onto the concrete path.

“Ouch!” Sully groaned. He lay flat on his back unable to move.

“Julia! How did you do that?” I closed my mouth when I realized that it was hanging open.

She brushed her hands together. “I used a judo throw that I learned in my self-defense class.” She looked calm, as though she hadn’t just prevented a dangerous person from escaping.

“What self-defense class? When did you start taking it?” I was pretty sure I would remember if Julia told me she was learning to throw people around.

“I’ve only been to a few classes, but Tristan thought it would be a good idea, considering the city has become less safe over the years.”

I stared at my best friend in amazement, but I didn’t get a chance to ask Julia more questions because Officers Shin and Frankel, along with Aiden, came charging out the door.

“What happened?” Officer Frankel called out when he saw the person of interest lying prone on the ground.

I pointed to Julia and said, “She used a judo throw to stop him from running away.”

The officers looked impressed.

Officer Shin went over and picked Sully off the ground. “Mr. Sullivan, we have some questions to ask you.”

Sully moaned and shifted awkwardly. He rubbed his right shoulder as it impacted the hard surface first. When the dive shop owner was led past me, I reached out to grab his arm to stop him.

“Sully, why did you run away?” I was bewildered by the older man’s action.

He avoided eye contact and looked down at the floor. I waited for a response, and I was about to give up on getting an explanation when he looked up at me.

Sully frowned and said, “I felt I had no choice.”

“But why?” Officer Shin asked before I could. He had one hand resting above his handcuffs. He was ready to use them if Sully decided to bolt.

“Sully, did you kill Trevor? Is that why you’ve been hiding?” I asked.

The dive shop owner let out a tired sigh. “I’ve had this shop in Monterey for over thirty years, and I can’t compete with the new places. Those operations have the cash to hire a ton of diving guides and new rental equipment. Heck, just updating the website nearly made me go broke, so I couldn’t buy a new line of gear.”

Aiden and I shared a discreet look at Sully’s last comment.

“And people these days don’t take diving seriously.” He let out a harsh laugh. “They spend a ton of money to get their scuba diving certification and dive one time. They don’t care about learning how to be a good diver, and hell, they especially don’t want to learn how to take care of their equipment.” His face grew redder as he spewed out his complaints.

“So, you killed Trevor because he was going to open another dive shop?” Aiden asked.

Sully’s shoulders sagged. “It’s not like that. He kept bragging that he was going to carry the latest and greatest scuba diving equipment.” He shook his head. “You saw the condition of the gear that I had.”

“How did you do it?” I asked curiously, but Officer Frankel interrupted before Sully could answer.

“That’s enough. No more questions from you.” He gave me a pointed look and then turned to the older man.

“Come on, Mr. Sullivan, we’re bringing you into the police station. We’ll do our official questioning there.” With a searing look at me, Officer Frankel led the older man to the police car.

“He looks defeated,” I said softly, observing his hunched shoulders. As the police car drove past us, Sully hung his head so we couldn’t meet his eyes.

“I wonder what will happen to him?” I asked.

“Depends on what he confesses. If he admits anything that’s criminal, he’ll be charged, and he’ll have to go on trial,” Aiden explained.

“It’s probably wishful thinking, but do you think the police will tell us anything after they interview him?”

“I doubt it, but I can ask for you,” he said with a smile.
