She was moving her head from side to side, and her face had a greenish tint, like a person who was on a small boat in rough waters. I ran my hand up and down her back, hoping she wouldn’t throw up.

"Thanks," Annisa whispered, and slowly, a more natural color returned to her cheeks. Her condition improved, but I continued patting her back. It was a gesture my mom used when I wasn't feeling well. I stopped when I felt a comforting hand on my own back.

"How are you holding up?" Aiden asked, his brown eyes filled with concern. I turned to him, placing my hands lightly on his forearms.

"I'm okay, but..." I hesitated, glancing at Annisa. Aiden followed my gaze, concern etching deeper into his features.

"What's wrong with her? She's acting like she knows the person," he whispered in my ear. I met his earnest gaze and sighed.

"Uh..." I began, searching for words.

Annisa suddenly blurted out, "I can't believe Trevor might be dead!" Her hands trembled, and she clasped them together as if she was trying to steady herself.

“Are you talking about Trevor Jones, our dive master?” Aiden’s voice grew louder, and his eyes narrowed in disbelief. I didn’t blame him. We’d just spoken to Trevor no more than fifteen minutes ago, but he hadn’t overheard Annisa’s argument.

Annisa cast her eyes at the ground. “I’m not certain if it’s him, but I hope not.”

Despite looking like the adventurous and sexy diver earlier on, she now seemed to be engulfed by the thick wetsuit. Additionally, the bright pink color contrasted the seriousness of the situation and made her look cartoonish.

“Are you going to be okay? I want to check on Sully.” I looked questioningly at her, and when she nodded numbly, I turned to Aiden. “I’m going to see if Sully needs help.”

“I’ll go with you,” Aiden said quickly and followed me around the bathroom.

“Oh, no!” Aiden gasped when he saw Trevor lying on the ground face down. The coffee cup that he was drinking from was strewn on the asphalt, and the liquid made a brown pool near his head.

I went closer and reached out to touch him, but before I did, Aiden grabbed my wrist. “You don’t want to do that,” he warned me sternly.

I was startled by the severity of his tone, but I knew he was right. I would’ve tainted the scene, and my fingerprints would’ve been on the dead man.

“Thanks,” I said gratefully, still staring at Trevor’s body. He was lying there as though he was asleep.

“I hear the ambulance,” Sully said, jarring me from the trance that I was in.

“Oh, thank God,” Aiden said and grabbed my hand, and we followed the dive master to meet the emergency responders.

Chapter Six

“This way!” Sully called to the first paramedic out of the vehicle and led him back to the area behind the bathrooms. The other medic followed with a stretcher.

“Who called the police?” asked Jeremy, his voice cracking. His baby face made him look barely old enough to be certified, and the teenager’s light brown hair flopped over his blue eyes. People were surprised when his dad told everyone that this trip was Jeremy’s sixteenth birthday present. His dad was also the same person who lectured Annisa when she complained about the scuba gear.

At Jeremy’s question, we looked toward the road as we watched the patrol car speed into the parking lot.

“I think it’s standard for the police to come if the ambulance is called for,” another diver answered. I couldn’t remember her name, but she had admired Annisa’s dive suit with Phoebe.

I looked at our group in the parking lot. Since all of us were about to go scuba diving, we were wearing our wetsuits while holding various pieces of scuba equipment. Even Aiden was carrying his fins because he’d rushed over here when he heard Phoebe scream.

“Please stay back!” a uniformed police officer ordered when he climbed out of the car. He frowned at us before he left to join the paramedics.

Another police officer got out of the driver’s side. He looked significantly younger than his partner. He was built and wore his black hair closely cropped to his head. Despite his intimidating appearance, he had a relaxed look on his face. I looked at his name tag, and it read Shin.

Officer Shin scanned the area before approaching the group of divers huddled together.

“Excuse me, can anyone tell me what happened?” When no one answered right away, the officer’s friendly look turned to irritation. Seeing the officer’s facial expression change, Aiden piped up.

“One of our scuba diving guides is dead. His name is Trevor Jones.”

“Did you find him?”
