“All you need are your phone and condoms. And Tori stuck half her supply in your coat pocket.” Nessa pulled a lip gloss out of her tiny clutch and applied a dab to my dry mouth. “You know how we taught you that vomiting on a guy was a way to get rid of him? I never thought I’d say this, but somehow you made it sexy.”

“Stop messing with me.”

She grabbed my shoulders and gently spun me to see. “Look. Cutie McHotterson is still waiting for you. Only now he’s waiting without a shirt. You have game I never knew existed, Valentine. You made throwing up irresistible.”

I blinked, then blushed. The guy—whose name was Michael—really was there, standing by the bar with no shirt on, talking to Nessa. But as soon as I walked back to the bar, his eyes were on me, not her.

He grinned as I approached. “Hey, gorgeous. You’re not sick?”

My face flamed, and I dropped my eyes. “No. Just humiliated.”

He lifted my chin with two fingers. He really had nice eyes, green and crinkled at the corners, like he smiled a lot. “Hey, no need for that. Midori makes my stomach do the mambo, too. Want to dance?” The music was so loud, it was hard to hear him over the throbbing beat.

“I was thinking of going home,” I admitted.

He winked and flexed his pecs at me. “Come on, birthday girl! The night’s young. Maybe we could take the party somewhere a little quieter?”

“Um…” I checked my phone. Fully charged. I checked my courage.

Almost entirely empty.

He moved right in front of me, gently trailing a hand down my arm. I shivered, and tried to convince myself it was a good shiver. “Want to go back to the hotel with me?” Behind him, Tori was nodding her head and giving me two thumbs up. “Don’t worry, I gave your sisters my number. We’re staying in the same hotel.” He lifted an eyebrow. “Pretty sure one of them ran a criminal background check on me while you were cleaning up.”

“You passed?”

“They said to tell you to be back in the room by midnight, and to have a cheeseburger or two. Are you hungry?”

I was panicky, and flattered, and weirdly disappointed. It was this easy to have sex? Like, you just walked into a club, had a drink, threw up on a guy, and boom! He was hooked?

My sisters were right. I’d built this up into a big thing, when it was more like going out for a cheeseburger. Casual. Not special, but not something to avoid.

“I should have had a cheeseburger years ago,” I murmured, taking his arm.

“I’ll get you one on the way home.” Michael led me through the club, giving finger guns to some other guys in the corner. One of them made a check mark on an invisible board. I was about to pull away when he muttered, “Ignore those jerks. They’re just jealous I’ve got the most beautiful woman in this place on my arm.”

My phone pinged as I pulled on my coat, and I saw a string of texts—mostly eggplant emojis—from my sisters. Rufus was at the door, as usual, and he tilted his chin up at me. When he tapped his throat, I pulled my collar a little wider, showing the gold necklace with the tracker in it that I always wore. That earned me a wink. He crossed his arms over his chest and mouthed a word. Condoms?

I nodded, blushing harder. In my coat, I mouthed back. It was so awkward, with everyone knowing I was going to have sex.

Michael helped me into my coat, then pulled his over his bare chest, flexing his pecs at me and winking again. “Like what you see, Vanessa?”

“I’m Valentine,” I corrected.

Quickly apologizing for his mistake, he took my arm on the icy sidewalk. As we walked to his BMW, he talked non-stop about himself, not letting up even after we were on the road. I stared out the window as he drove, getting more and more nervous.

“So then the rowing team was one man short, and I was like, hey, I can fill the spot, I do CrossFit four times a?—”

“Michael?” I interrupted. “I’m pretty sure the hotel was back there.”

“Oh, I thought you wanted to eat?” he teased, but there was something off in his tone. “I know the best spot.”

“Where?”

Before I finished the word, he’d pulled off the road and into a rest stop that was mounded with snow on both sides. I couldn’t even see the main road from here, and when he switched the ignition off and pushed his seat back, I knew something was up.

His dick, apparently.

“Right here.” He pointed at his crotch. “All a hungry girl like you needs to fill up.”
