Caden huffed but relented. He really was tired.

“Follow me,” Mrs. Burns said once he’d rejoined her, heading up the left-hand staircase. Her black shoes lightly tapped on each wooden step.

Caden glanced back, but Quinten was already gone. He could just barely hear him say something about a lost container at a port before a door shut and he couldn’t hear him at all.

His brows furrowed as he reached the top of the stairs. He would have to do some investigating. He hadn’t scented anything when they first came in but for a single door to completely block the noise behind it, there had to be magic involved. How many rooms did Quinten have that were soundproofed?

He supposed it would be convenient to have an office where he could go for privacy, but did he have other rooms like that? Caden wasn’t sure he’d like not being able to find him as quickly and easily as he’d want if something was happening.

He could still scent him though. It wasn’t like he was completely hidden. Besides, Quinten had a wolf who rarely left his side; it wasn’t like he needed Caden to protect him.

Mrs. Burns led him down a couple of hallways, and he knew if he had been human, he would’ve been lost when he tried to find his way back.

Stopping, she opened a door and gestured him inside. The bedroom was quite large, the bed even bigger than the one he had slept in at Kincaid’s house, with a large TV mounted on the wall across from it. Two huge windows looking out into a backyard that had a pool and what looked like a hedge maze were on one wall. There was also an attached bathroom and a walk-in closet.

Altogether, it was bigger than his last apartment.

He inhaled subtly, expecting to find Quinten’s scent embedded in the room. This had to be the main bedroom, didn’t it? It was enormous. But all he found was the scent of freshly washed sheets and a little bit of dust.

“If you’d like to rest now, I can come back in a while for your list of necessities,” Mrs. Burns said, still in the doorway. “If you need anything before then, you can find me in the kitchen usually.”

He nodded, still glancing around at the luxurious room.

She started to back, pulling the door with her. “After you’ve had some time to recover, make sure you make your list.”

“Oh, I don’t need anything,” Caden said quickly.

She glanced down at his borrowed sweats. “I think you could use a few things.”

Her face didn’t change, but there was a hint of humor in her voice and scent.

He wondered if she was making fun of him or if she was just stoic like Dare. “Yeah, I guess,” he admitted. “But I don’t need a phone or anything. Quinten doesn’t have to pay for that stuff for me.”

She cocked her head but didn’t argue, simply stepped back out into the hall and told him to get some rest. As soon as the door was closed behind her, Caden pulled off his borrowed clothes and walked heavily over to the bed. He peeled back the covers and climbed in, expecting to fall right to sleep.

That was not the case.

He tossed and turned for probably an hour before he finally gave up and dragged himself back out of bed, somehow even more tired than he had been before. He pulled his sweatpants back on but didn’t bother with his shirt and headed out.

It took him a while, but he was able to use his nose to find a room that had a lingering scent of orange blossoms seeping from it. He carefully pushed open the door and peered inside, not expecting to find Quinten but not wanting to bother him if he was in there.

Okay, yeah, this was obviously the master bedroom.

It was easily twice as wide as the room Caden had been given, with a bed just as big and a sitting area next to a wall that was made up of glass.

He inhaled deeply, and his eyes fell to half-mast. By the time he pulled his sweats back off and climbed under the covers, he was already falling asleep.

Chapter Nine

Quinten rubbed at his throbbing temples and ignored the way Dare and Nero were still half-heartedly sniping at each other. The two of them had the strangest friendship. For the most part, they got along just fine. But every once in a while, Nero seemed to get some sort of sick pleasure at poking at the wolf, trying to get him riled up.

Even less often, Dare let him.

Luckily, they weren’t going at it too hard, Nero just teasing Dare about their trip to Kincaid’s territory.

Quinten had just gotten off the phone with the fifth person he’d had to call since he’d arrived at his house, but the shipping container issue was finally resolved. He usually wouldn’t have had to personally deal with something like that, but the container in question held materials for his… less-than-legal side of the business. He’d been worried it had been accidentally loaded onto another ship, but they finally found it in the wrong spot at the shipping yard. Soon, all of the cargo would be unloaded and sent off to where it needed to be, making him a shit ton of money.

“What time is it?” he asked without opening his eyes.
