“What do you mean?”

“She’s just said goodbye to me, like never see me again goodbye, wherever she’s going, whatever she’s doing, she doesn’t plan on coming back, for any of us.”

“Shit!” I start pacing. I mean, what the fuck am I supposed to do with that knowledge?

Ray

The door opens, and Pops walks in, his lips pressed into a sad smile, and I sigh. “Come on in.”

“I wasn’t sure if you’d see me.”

“Pops, you know I love you, and I know you’ve gone to bat for me, which I appreciate, but I won’t put you in a place that makes you choose between me and Scar. She’s your daughter. I understand.”

“And so are you, Ray. I would never choose between you, you know that, and Scar’s—”

“Don’t, Pops. I know what she thinks of me. He has the clubhouse bugged, and there’s a 24-hour video feed. He made me watch everything, even at the prison. I saw everything, Pops, what was said, what Steel did, I saw it all, and I saw her say I deserved it. Don’t do this. I'm done. I’m walking away. I hope you understand. I will always love you. And I thank you for everything you’ve done for me over the years.” I let out another sigh. “This is the end for us all, Pops. Just remember that what happens from here on out, I love you, and I always will.”

“Ray…”

“It’s okay. I’ll be okay. Just look after them all and yourself.”

“Ray, you make it sound like I’ll never see you again.”

I shrug. What else can I say to that? I don’t actually think I’ll ever see any of them again.

“Ray, don’t do anything stupid. I love you, and I’ll support you whatever. You know that, right?”

“Goodbye, Pops.” I turn away from him.

“Ray, please.”

I just shake my head but refuse to look at him. I can’t; it’s breaking my heart to lose him, but I know it’s for the best.

As he leaves, the tears flow. I don’t make a sound, though. I know I’ll lose them all after this. Either way, I’m on my own.

The nurse comes in for the final check before bed. “Do you have it all?”

She nods. Pulling out the duffel bag from under the drugs cart, she asks, “You’ll send the money?”

“You know who I am?” She nods. “You know I’m good for it. You’ll get it within the week.”

She nods and leaves the room. I start on my preparations, gritting my teeth and pushing through the pain.

Once I’ve “set” the room, cleaned and changed, I slide out of the window. It’s only a two-storey building, and even though I’m weaker than normal, I’m able to scale the side of it before panting under the window as I hit the floor, pulling out the phone the nurse left.

“Hi, I’m out. Is it ready?”

“Yes.”

“Thank you.”

“Ray…?”

“Don’t… please!”

“I love you, baby girl. Please come home to me.”

“I love you!”
