“Dante… it's gone, they’re gone!”

“What?”

“The Adventure Centre burnt to the ground, Dad’s dead, Steven and JJ… they’re both dead, there's only Bernie and Cade left.”

“Get out!” he screams at me as he picks up his chair and launches it over the desk.

“Dante.”

“Get fucking out!” He kicks at the desk, and I jump out of the chair before the fucking thing hits me. I make it to the door as a bottle of whisky or tequila, or something explodes at the side of my head as it hits the wall. I don’t look back. I just push through the door and slam it behind me. I rest against the wall, listening and smiling to myself as the fucking tantrum carries on. He’s smashing the whole room to bits, he’s unravelling, and I can’t help, but mentally fist-bump my fucking awesomeness.

I stroll down the stairs, and I’m met by a goon. “I need to see the boss.”

“Yeah, I’d give him a wide berth for a few hours if I were you. He's having a… moment!”

“What the fuck’s that supposed to mean?”

I smile and tap my ear, and as he pushes closer, you can hear the faint roars and smashing followed by ranting and cursing.

I clap him on the shoulder, “He knows where I’ll be when he calms the fuck down. Good luck with that!” I nod back in the direction of my big brother and grin like the motherfucker that I am as I sashay out of the main door and into the early morning sunshine. It's a beautiful fucking day.

I flop onto the sofa. Fuck, it's been a rough couple of months. They’ve hit four bases, we’ve taken minimal casualties, and I’m grateful Ray’s on our side, as she’s really looking after everyone.

Steel pushes out of his room, “What time did you get back?”

“Fuck knows. I don’t even know what fucking day it is.” Wanker just grins like the twat that he is.

“Ray?”

“She’s kicking our butts, and I’m exhausted and fucking sore and fucking relieved she’s on our side as fuck… if she was against us, she would single-handedly be able to take us down and fucking crush us.”

He laughs, fucking full-on belly laugh and grins. “That’s my fucking girl.”

“Well, I'm glad my misery is bringing you so much enjoyment.”

“What can I say? It's the only thing keeping me sane right now. I’m trying not to burn the world down to find her, and the fucking wake nearly broke us all, but knowing that she’s still a force to be reckoned with makes it bearable.” He grins like he's lost in memory before adding, “Have you seen her?”

I shake my head. “No, nothing. She’s sticking to the plan. She’s doing everything she said she would, so she’s still on top of everything, but no one has had eyes on her yet other than that first base they hit. They’ve been cleaner, more organised. We think Bas sent cannon fodder in on the first job, which is why it was sloppier, but he's upped his game since. We still keep dwindling his numbers, but we've heard nothing. She got me into his laptop, though, so we have some information, but we’re still waiting to hear from her.”

“I thought I heard your voice. Why didn't you come to bed?” Dice pushes through the door, looking fucking delicious in his boxers with his sleep messed hair, and I bite my lip and sigh.

“Because I’m dead on my feet, and this was as far as I could manage.” I flop back on the sofa and sigh again. “I'm too old for this shit.”

Dice chuckles. “Yeah, you're such an old man, so gross.” He walks over and kisses me over the back of the sofa. “Shall I run you a bath, babe? I love you, but you kinda stink.”

I pull my T-shirt to my nose and sniff, groaning, “Ergh, fuck, that’s grim!” I rip it off over my head and push up from the sofa.

“Fucking hell, did you get shot?” Dice rushes to my side, grabbing at my arm.

“It's just a flesh wound, it's fine.”

“Fine! It's not fucking fine. You could have been killed.”

“Nah, I’m pretty sure it was Ray that shot me, so I was never gonna get truly injured.”

“I thought you said you hadn't seen her?” Steel spits as he comes around to grab my arm, too.
