When we got to his office, he turned to me and smiled. “She’s a perfect match for you, son. I’m glad you have her by your side. You both will make a great team when you take over.”

“I don’t want her around the business like that,” I replied. “I really just want her to have as normal of a life as she can.”

Dad looked like he added more grey to his salt-and-pepper hair overnight.

He sighed. “Son, the others are already asking when you are taking over since you were dealing with them during her kidnapping. Also, word got out about how she killed Craig, and they want to meet her as well.”

I was furious. How did word get out about that? I don’t want them to meet her.

Dad put his hands on my shoulders, pulling me out of my thoughts. “You don’t have to introduce her formally, but when you guys marry, the other bosses will be there. I am not going to force you to take over soon, but now you know you have to take over.”

I nodded, and we stayed quiet for a while. Thoughts of me taking over and Dawn leaving me ran through my mind.

When he finally spoke again, he asked, “How is she?”

I told him she was doing fine.

He said with pride, “She is one tough cookie. She didn’t even flinch when she pulled the trigger.”

I shook my head, saying, “I’m worried she is going to regret doing that, Dad. Killing someone takes a toll on you and she wasn’t raised like that—I was barely raised like that. I still had a childhood because of Mom. What if she wakes up one day and decides to take the baby and leave me because of this business? What will I do then?”

“I can tell she is not that type of woman, Jason. She loves you with all her heart and I think she was trying to prove to you that she can get dirty just like you if she must. Go on and talk to her, son.”

I left his office and walked to the kitchen to see Darius sitting and staring at the wall. I pulled up a chair next to him and asked if was he okay.

He looked frustrated. “I’m worried about Dawn. She never killed before and plus she is pregnant. This type of stress is bad for her and the baby.”

I understood what he meant. I was worried about her too. “I will talk to her and see where her head is at.”

Darius sighed. “I am going back home today since she seems to be doing fine. Thank you for finding my sister.”

I didn’t need the thanks because I would go to the ends of the world for her.

I went back into my room and saw Dawn lying in the bed, asleep. She had taken off her clothes from earlier and put on some night shorts and a tank top. I knew my baby was tired from all the sex we were having, to being pregnant and kidnapped. I took off my clothes and got in the bed with her. She snuggled up to me, and I dozed off while holding her.

I woke up to her tracing my chest with her fingers.

I asked, “Are you okay, baby?”

She nodded and looked at me, smiling. I sat up so we could talk, and she sat up, looking at me like she knew something was bothering me. I held her hand as I tried my best to figure out what I wanted to say.

“Dawn, I’m worried about you. I feel like you will regret what you did to my cousin, and maybe blame me or, worse, yourself.” She opened her mouth, but I put my finger on her lips. “Wait, let me finish. I’m scared you may wake up one day, take the baby, and leave me because of my family. I love you and I don’t want to lose you or our baby. I feel bad that you had to kill someone because of me.”

“Stop, just stop. I told you I had to kill him for my peace of mind. Why are you trying to blame yourself for something he brought upon himself? I love you, Jason, and I always will. I will never leave you or take our baby away from you. Please stop thinking that. I hate I can’t make you stop thinking that. Don’t you believe me when I say I’m forever yours?”

I smiled at her as she looked at me seriously. She was pleading with me to listen and believe her. I reached over to my nightstand and opened the drawer, taking out a small box. I had planned for this to be when she wanted to have our romantic dinner before everything happened.

I opened the box and said, “I love you, Dawn. I do believe you. Will you marry me?”

EPILOGUE

TWO MONTHS LATER

DAWN

Jason and I wanted to get married before I started showing. I was grateful I still didn’t have a stomach and only our family knew about the baby. We decided to keep it quiet for the time being. I felt like only our family should know, anyway.

I was staring in the mirror at my reflection as I had on my wedding dress. I wore a white princess V-neck, sleeveless, ruffles sweep train dress.
