I started feeling hopeful again as I continued my journey through the city. All around me there was proof that love had the power to overcome all obstacles and triumph in any situation, no matter how difficult it seemed at first glance. This gave me a newfound hope, which I desperately needed now more than ever.

As I continued walking, my thoughts wandered back to Vanessa and what our future might look like if we ended up together.

Later that day, I found myself in a rare moment of solitude between diplomatic meetings. Seizing the opportunity, I tapped into my mental bond with Vanessa, sensing her hunger once again gnawing at her. I couldn’t bear the thought of her suffering through another workday without proper nourishment.

“Hey, Thorko,” I called to one of my Orkarian coworkers, “do you know any good food delivery options around here?”

“Absolutely! There’s this fantastic human place that does sandwiches and salads. They deliver pretty quick, too,” Thorko replied enthusiastically.

“Perfect. Send a variety of their best options to Vanessa’s office, please. And make sure they include some protein-rich choices.”

“Sure thing, Zorak,” said Thorko, giving me a knowing grin as he placed the order on his tablet.

“You know, if you’re really serious about this human-Orkarian mating thing, maybe you should observe humans a bit more,” Thorko suggested. “I’ve heard about these things called ‘rom-coms.’ Apparently, they teach humans how to mate. We should watch some and figure out their secrets!”

Instantly intrigued, I leaned forward in my chair, eager for Thorko’s explanation. He told me that rom-coms were movies and TV shows about romance between two people. Despite the fact that they were mostly fiction, some of them had surprisingly accurate portrayals of real-life relationships.

That night, after work, I gathered my Orkarian coworkers in our shared living quarters for an impromptu movie marathon. As experts in diplomacy, we were all skilled in reading people and understanding their behaviors. It was high time that I learned more about these mysterious human mating rituals that were ever-present in this culture.

“All right, everyone,” I announced, “tonight’s entertainment will be a selection of romantic comedies, or ‘rom-coms,’ as the humans call them.”

“Ah, yes. I’ve heard of these films,” chirped Lendrok, another coworker. “They often depict humorous situations that arise from romantic pursuits, correct?”

“Exactly,” I confirmed, eager to begin our study session. “Let’s start with this one.” I selected a popular title and started the movie. The opening credits were accompanied by cheerful music filling the room.

As we watched, my Orkarian friends provided lively commentary, pointing out subtle cues and gestures that indicated attraction between the characters. It was fascinating how humans could convey so much meaning through a simple touch or lingering glance. I absorbed this new knowledge like a sponge, determined to apply it in my interactions with Vanessa.

We started with some of the classics like You’ve Got HaloMail and Average Woman. Then we moved on to a few more modern films, such as Crazy Rich Star Riders and Love Perhaps. Finally, I decided that it was time for us to watch something together that all of us could relate to, an interspecies romantic comedy called When Tohta Met Pauline.

As we watched the characters on-screen struggle through their difficulties and triumph over obstacles, I felt more connected to them. Even though they were from a different species than ours, their problems weren’t too dissimilar from our own.

“Did you notice how he complimented her appearance without being overly forward?” Lendrok pointed out during one scene. “It made her feel special without overwhelming her.”

“Indeed,” I mused, filing the observation away for future reference. “There’s a delicate balance to be struck in these matters, it seems. Her mammary glands are well structured for providing nourishment to their future offspring, but when another male complimented them, she spurned him.”

“Absolutely,” agreed Thorko. “One must be attentive and caring but not smothering. It’s an art form, really.”

“An art form I intend to master,” I vowed, more determined than ever to win Vanessa’s heart. As the movie marathon continued into the night, I grew more confident in my ability to show Vanessa that we were meant to be together.

And as the last credits rolled on the screen, I knew my journey had only just begun.

My mind buzzed with anticipation as I recalled the various insights gleaned from those late-night rom-com marathons. Today, I would continue my quest to win Vanessa’s heart by subtly applying the human mating rituals I had learned.

“All right, Zorak, you can do this!” I muttered to myself, my arms shaking slightly with anxiety. “You’ve been studying the ancient art of T’rra’s dating practices. Time to put it all into action!”

I took a deep breath, attempting to collect myself, and dialed Vanessa’s number on my holophone.

“Hello?” Vanessa’s voice emanated softly through the phone, timid yet curious.

“Hey, Vanessa! It’s Zorak.” I said, trying my best to sound casual, even though my heart was pounding like an asteroid hurtling towards T’rra.

“Oh, right,” she said, her tone shifting to guarded politeness.

“Well, would you like to grab some coffee together sometime soon?”

“Umm...” Vanessa hesitated. I had to move fast.

“Listen, Vanessa, just this once, I’m begging you, I’m on my knees here, sort of anyway. I won’t bother you again,” I said nervously.
