“I’ll take the Grundian steak, rare, with a side of astral poppers. The lady will have the space bass and the baby green salad with two sides of dressing, please,” Zorak ordered smoothly for both of us.

I was shocked. “How do you know I wanted the space bass? How do you always know what I want?”

Zorak smiled and shrugged. “We’re mated. It is my duty and pleasure to know what you might want.”

His words warmed me, and I felt my face flush. It was true, ever since we had met, Zorak had known exactly what I needed before I did. He had a way of making me feel seen and heard in a way no one ever had.

“Anyway, thank you for the lovely dinner,” he said, raising his glass of blue wine to mine.

We clinked glasses and exchanged a tender smile as we sipped from our drinks. The food arrived shortly thereafter, and we enjoyed the meal in comfortable conversation that could only be shared between two people who truly understood each other.

I felt myself relaxing into the evening as I ate, and my eyes roamed my dinner companion. He was very tall and strapped with muscle that filled out his suits until I thought they might tear.

I remembered the evening we had shared on the pleasure planet and felt myself grow warm. He had been so caring and attentive and had made sure I enjoyed every moment of our time in his bed.

“Easy.” He grinned wryly at me. “You have me all worked up over here.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize…”

“That I can feel your sexual attraction to me?” He raised his brows and radiated male satisfaction. “I can feel what you feel through our link. That includes the sexy thoughts that make it somewhat inappropriate physically for me to be in public.”

He glanced down at his lap, and it took a moment before I realized he meant I had turned him on.

I burst out laughing and he joined in, cooling the sexual tension between us.

When the waitress arrived to ask if we wanted dessert, I beat him to the punch.

“No, thank you,” I answered.

He chuckled and shook his head. “You sure? I hear the Xyrian truffles are to die for here.”

I waved him off and shook my head again. “No, thank you. Maybe some other time.”

He smiled warmly at me and then motioned for the waitress to bring us our check so we could be on our way.

“You can’t keep feeding me this way,” I insisted and rubbed my very full belly. “I’ll grow so large you’ll have to roll me down the street.”

“I doubt it,” he laughed. “Besides, we Orkarians have a way of working off all our heavy meals.”

He waggled his eyebrows at me suggestively.

“Yes, well, I have to return to the office for a few hours, so you’ll need to find another way to work off the meal.”

As we left the restaurant, he slipped his arm around me, and I leaned into him contentedly. We talked about the visa case, and he grew animated when he spoke of a father being separated from his wife who was in labor. I could tell he truly cared for the well-being of others.

He insisted upon escorting me to my office, only leaving when I promised to call so we could meet for a late-night drink when I was through.

I agreed and watched as he left the office with a swagger. If I happened to notice how broad his shoulders were or how tight his backside was, I chalked it up to having ingested too many Rylaxian blue wines.

I was shuffling through my paperwork and about to dive in when someone cleared their throat behind me. I turned to find Lyle staring at me, seeming less than impressed.

“What is this I hear about dinner with the diplomat?” Lyle asked with annoyance.

“What do you mean? Dinner with Zorak? We went out to celebrate the filing on that visa case today and to discuss strategies.”

“Really? Strategies? You don’t think it’s more than a little unprofessional to go to dinner with a diplomat you are working an immigration case with?” he practically spat at me.

“Look, it’s not like that. There’s no way I would ever compromise my professionalism. We just wanted to celebrate the filing.”
