“I knew they’d miss me,” I muttered under my breath. My fingers flew across the screen as I started typing a reply to my boss’s urgent request.

“Hey there, beautiful!” A voice interrupted my frantic typing. I glanced up to see a tall, green-skinned alien orc with vibrant green eyes and a smile that seemed to defy the laws of physics. His green skin rippled with bulging muscles and his warrior visage had an animalistic appeal. His tusks should have been intimidating but they seemed to frame his face and accentuate his sharp jaw more.

“Uh, hi?” I replied hesitantly, unsure of what to make of this otherworldly creature who had taken an interest in me.

“Allow me to introduce myself. I am Zorak,” he announced proudly, extending one hand for a handshake. “You seem awfully busy for someone on vacation.”

“Vacation,” I scoffed, shaking his hand while trying not to stare at the extra limbs. “More like a temporary reprieve from the never-ending grind of work.”

“Ah, then you have come to the right place!” Zorak exclaimed, gesturing to the row of exotic drinks behind him. “I know just the thing to help you forget your troubles.”

“Really?” I asked skeptically, clutching my phone with its ever-growing list of unread emails.

“Trust me,” Zorak winked, his iridescent eyes twinkling mischievously. “How about you try our famous Flaming Supernova? It’s guaranteed to make you feel... out of this world.”

“Isn’t that a bit strong for someone who’s never had one before?” I questioned, feeling both intrigued and apprehensive at the prospect of trying such a potent concoction.

“Ah, but that’s the point!” Zorak insisted. “Sometimes, we have to take risks to experience life truly.”

I hesitated momentarily, my fingers hovering over my phone’s screen. Did I really want to spend my entire vacation fretting over work? Or was it time for me to let go and embrace the unknown?

“All right,” I relented, setting my phone down on the bar with a sigh. “One Flaming Supernova, please.”

The Flaming Supernova arrived with a flourish, its iridescent liquid swirling and shimmering in the glass. Zorak raised his drink and enthusiastically clinked it against mine.

“To new experiences!” he declared, downing his beverage in one go.

I hesitated momentarily, watching with amusement as Zorak wiped his mouth. I took a deep breath and followed suit, bracing myself for the potent concoction. The liquid burned like fire as it cascaded down my throat, igniting every nerve ending and causing sparks to dance behind my eyes.

“Whoo!” I exclaimed, feeling lightheaded and exhilarated. My body felt warm and loose as if the chains of my inhibitions had been broken.

“See? I told you,” Zorak said, grinning broadly. “Now, how about we make use of that newfound freedom?”

Before I knew it, Zorak had whisked me onto the dance floor, his limbs moving gracefully in time with the music. I couldn’t help but laugh, feeling the weight of work-related worries slipping away with each step we took.

“Wow, I never thought I’d be dancing with an Orkarian,” I admitted, spinning giddily under Zorak’s guidance.

“Nor did I ever think I would be dancing with such a captivating human,” Zorak replied, his iridescent eyes meeting mine with genuine warmth.

As we moved together, my body humming with energy from the Flaming Supernova, I found myself surprisingly attuned to Zorak’s movements. His dance moves complemented my own, allowing us to glide across the floor in a hypnotic dance unlike anything I’d ever experienced.

At that moment, I realized that maybe Zoe was right. I needed to let go of my fears and reservations and embrace the unknown with open arms. And as I twirled beneath the kaleidoscopic lights, laughter bubbling up from within me, it felt like I was doing just that.

“Thank you, Zorak,” I murmured, feeling a newfound appreciation for this strange, wonderful creature who had given me the courage to step outside my comfort zone.

“Anytime, Vanessa,” he replied, his smile as radiant as the stars above. “After all, that’s what friends are for.”

And with those words, we danced on into the night, our laughter echoing through the velvety darkness as we embraced the boundless possibilities ahead.

Chapter 2

Zorak

The universe seemed to pause the moment I looked at Vanessa. She was sitting stiffly at a corner of the dance floor, her hands clasped to her phone as if she were afraid she’d miss something. Her conservative dress contrasted sharply with the vibrant, skin-tight attire worn by the other revelers at the resort.

But still I was drawn in. Even though her lips were curved down into a frown, I couldn’t take my eyes off her plush mouth. Her dark hair fell beautifully around her slender face, and her eyes shone bright with a fierce intelligence I was already admiring. She was an enigma, and I was instantly captivated.

The Flaming Supernova had done the trick because we had been dancing for hours. She was loosening up, and I had a feeling I was seeing who she really was beneath. It was more enticing than I expected.
