“I need to go read those notes. There’s got to be something there.” He looks up. “Jet! Jet!”

I turn around and find Jet standing at the open door, staring out the way Scarlet disappeared. He turns back to us. “She will not forgive us. I wouldn’t.” His tone is bleak.

I press at my chest, sure, there’s a wound there.

Taylor makes a sound of deep annoyance. I round on him, growling. He levels me with a flat look and starts rolling up the sleeves of his shirt.

“We don’t have time. Pull yourselves together. Scarlet is the most capable woman in the world. If we survive this, we can try to make it up to her.”

“And do what?” Acton snaps. “What we just did was unforgivable.”

“Apologise!” Taylor kicks a side table across the room. It’s so sudden and violent and completely not like him that we all fall into silence.

“Apologise, grovel, beg, plead, bargain, blackmail. Do whatever we need to, but only if we can keep them both safe. She is safe now,” Taylor roars. “But he isn’t. He is Merry’s target. He’s always been her target. Merry is not going to just let him live.”

I shudder at her name.

But fuck it all, Taylor’s right.

“Let’s find Barren,” I say.

The house feels different now that she’s gone. It feels dead and empty. I don’t like it. We move quickly through the house until I get to the kitchen. I duck just in time. A plate shatters into the wall next to me.

“Bar, stop!” I shout.

He ignores me and throws a crystal vase.

“How dare you bark me into obedience? How dare you send my alpha away! Some pack you are. Heathens! Traitors! Backstabbing pigs!” Three more cups hit the wall. But now I’m not alone, Taylor, Acton, and Jet have added themselves as targets.

Barren isn’t quite screaming. It’s more a roar of sound, but underlying it is a pain so deep it echoes against mine.

I take a step and dodge to the right, a wooden cutting board narrowly missing me. I manage to get close and wrap him in my arms. He heaves, trying to get his elbows into my ribs, and when that fails, he kicks out at my legs.

“Shh, baby, shh.” I stroke his back as he dissolves into ragged, furious breathing. He struggles against me, but he can’t break free.

I press a kiss to the side of his head. “Trust us, baby. Please.”

“She’s my alpha,” Bar screams. “She’s mine. She’s ours. How could you do that? How could you send her away? I marked her. She’s mine.”

My heart stumbles to a halt, and I look up, meeting Jet’s horrified stare. The sheer pain that’s going to put our omega and Scarlet in. I couldn’t even imagine. We drove her away with a newly minted pack bond?

Oh…god…

“She has a pack bond?” Jet asks in horror.

“She’s mine!” He screams. Wails. It’s a sound of such agony. It breaks my heart. I put my face in his shoulder and sob, for me, for him, for her, for us.

Fuck. Shit. Fuck.

And then, as if to confirm all my worst fears, he opens the bond, allowing us to feel her, to feel him. It’s only a shadow filtered through his bond, but my knees grow weak, and the room spins. I find myself staring at the wood of the floor, where my legs dumped me. Tears run down my face, and I reach out with a clawed hand blindly.

“We need to fix this!” Acton says.

“Shut your mouth!” Taylor barks. “All of you get yourselves together.”

Taylor walks further into the room and walks straight over to Barren. He grips our omega’s chin and tilts his face up so they’re staring at each other.

Barren is staring at Taylor with what’s bordering on hate. He spits out vile curses, growling viciously the whole time.
