“She’s not at the manor anymore.” The omega says, and my attention sharpens. Razor sharp, with deadly intent.

“If I see her, I can tell her you are looking for her.”

“No. Don’t do that. I’m sure we’ll catch up soon.”

I watch as they leave the store and then move to stand beside Annie.

“Got a bad feeling about those two.” Annie says in a dark voice.

Me too. “Annie, I’ll come back into town before I leave.” I rush out, peering through the window, watching the two.

She nods. “Be smart, Alpha.”

I grin at her and exit the store. I pad through the town, following the two scents until they vanish completely. I turn in a circle and spend the next two hours trying to pick it up again, but it’s gone.

Over the next five days, I catch sight of them three times, try to track them on more than twice that amount, but they are elusive. Every time I get close, they slip away. It’s maddening.

There’s an intent, feral quality in my scent now. It’s close to how I smell in a rut, but this is a state of mind with a deadly purpose. A deep wildness that is driving me on.

I know they have something to do with my pack. I know it, I can feel it in every molecule of my blood, on every part of my alpha designation. I’d put money on that being Merry, the omega who tried to kill my Barren, and Art, the feral alpha. She’s back, and she wants what’s mine.

A low growl erupts from my chest.

My bags are packed, the cabins is locked tight. But I can’t leave. Not with them here. I can’t go, leaving my pack helpless and alone.

Yesterday, in an act of desperation, I went to the manor. A large section was scarred with black soot, the rest of it boarded up. The destroyed room is one Barren uses often for his work, and it’s gutted. Luckily, the fire appears to have been contained. I’ve never felt such helpless panic as I did in that moment.

The manor was on fire. They could have died, could be hurt. They refused to answer my knocks. They’ve already blocked my number. I could feel them in there, but they remained inside, freezing, icing me out.

Jet came outside after hours had passed while I stood in the yard, staring sightlessly at the burnt section. He stood there watching me until I turned to him. I searched his eyes for anything, any feeling, any emotion, but there was nothing but disdain. And that disdain is cold and lonely.

“What are you doing here?”

His impersonal voice hit me in the face like an icy wind.

“There was a fire? Is everyone okay?” I hated the stutter in my voice, the uncertainty.

“Everyone is fine.” Jet looked down at his watch and back up at me. “You’re trespassing.”

“I know…I just came…” I stopped my mouth from letting the verbal vomit out. “I’m leaving. I came to say goodbye.”

If I thought my leaving might garner any reaction, I would be wrong. I got nothing but stony silence.

“Am I supposed to care?”

I flinched.

“Jet?” It was a whisper, but he didn’t hear. He was already walking away.

It just cemented my belief that I should be alone. I’m destined to be alone. I’m going back to the city.

Another wild growl rips from my throat. It was stupid to think that I could deserve to be happy. I pick up my bags and take them to my car.

Anger stops my movements. Instincts driving my mind round and round. How can I protect him when I can’t get close? I pace around my yard. I look in my car, searching for the price that I earned, but it’s not there. The scent of toilet flowers fills my nostrils.

Everything in me stills. I smile, baring my teeth in a vicious grin.

I drive into town the next morning.
