“How old are you?” Barren asks suddenly.

“I’m thirty.”

“Me, too.” He peers at me and hums. “What do you like to eat?”

“Anything. I’m not fussy, but I don’t like fruits much.” I raise an eyebrow. “You?”

“Oh, I like everything, but I love sweets.” He frowns.

This conversation is feeling a bit like an interview or a…dare I think it, date? I reject the thought and catch him chewing his lip.

“You’ve got something on your mind. Just ask.”

His face scrunches up, and he scowls. “It's just, I’ve never met or seen…” He trails off, his cheeks turning red.

It’s adorable.

“A female Alpha? I’ve only met another person like me once, and she is ancient. Mind you, I haven’t met a male omega before you, so there’s that.”

He grins. “We’re unique.” But his smile fades again.

What’s going on here?

I reach out and touch his hand. He turns his faster than I can think, engulfing my small hand in his. My breath is stolen from my lungs with how right this feels. That’s not what I was trying to do…but I can’t think straight because all that fire I’d banked is burning me up alive.

“Come on, we’re almost at the top.”

I almost fall for the innocence, but when he looks back at me with liquid bedroom eyes, I realise whatever I’m feeling, he is, too. Except he’s almost out of control.

I try to tug my hand free, but he holds on tightly, moving me up the trail. “People treat me differently.”

I stop resisting and move with him, curious by the cold pain in his voice. “They should.”

He turns and looks at me, stricken. I move until we’re standing chest to chest. “You’re a male omega. You are different. You get to be who you want to be.”

The expression fades, leaving a confused hope in its wake. Butterflies crash through me, and I realise I’m flirting a dangerous line right now.

“Is that what you did?”

“Of course. I’m a female alpha. I never tried to play them at their games. I created my own.”

He shuffles closer, but I pull my hand free and put several feet between us.

“Sorry.”

I breathe heavily, in and out, trying to clear the scent from inside me. “It’s my fault, not yours.”

Jet wraps himself around the omega, and I have no choice but to look away. It hurts to see them like that. They have something I will never have.

“I really need to get home. I’ve got some emails to address.”

“You’re coming to dinner, right?” Jet teases, sending a flirty wink my way.

“Is it going to stop you from asking?” I huff.

Jet laughs and kisses Barren’s neck, never once taking his eyes from me. “Maybe.”

I scowl. “Fine. I’ll take a chance. Yes. I’ll be there.”
