He grins. It’s wolfish and not at all kind or pleasant. “Care to spend a few minutes catching up?”

“Not.” No way in hell would I want to do that.

“All right. How about we discuss the time you-“

I stand up, my face flaming. “On second thought, let’s go chat.”

He comes around the table and walks off without a backwards glance, expecting me to follow. I glance around the table at the others, barely able to meet their curious gazes.

“Please excuse me for a moment.”

I go through the open door at the end of the room and follow the corridor. I can’t see any sign of him, but that doesn’t mean anything. Gold always was good at vanishing and reappearing. The door behind me closes, and the light flicks off, leaving me in the dark.

The hairs on my neck rise and nerves bubble. I stretch my fingers out and try to calm myself.

My neck is seized, and I’m pushed up against a wall before I can speak. I lift my leg, intending to kick, but a thigh forces my legs open and a huge chest presses my torso to the wall.

“Red, you shouldn’t be here.” Oh, gods, I missed how he would talk to me like that, in that enraged whisper. I’d almost forgotten how it sounded.

The hand on my neck releases, only to grab my hair and yank it back. I gasp out and smile through the pain.

“Like old times, Brother?”

He hisses, and his teeth bite hard into my earlobe. I clench my thighs together in the familiar response. “I’ll ask you again, Red. Why are you here?”

My arousal ebbs, and I close my eyes. “I don't want to say.”

“Scarlet Venus Waring, why are you back here?” He whispers into my ear before violently spinning me around and slamming his weight back against me.

I grip his shoulders, curling my fingers in the fabric. I allow his scent to wrap around me, breathing it in. Whiskey, I’ve missed it.

“Red-“

“I didn’t have anywhere else to go.” I spit out.

“How can you…” he trails off, eyeing me curiously. He tilts my head to the side, both ways.

I snarl.

He snarls back.

“So you came home?” There’s a cautious note in his voice.

I snarl again. Defensive. Angry. Trying to not want him is impossible.

He leans in closer. “Keep making those noises, and I’ll give you a reason to make them.”

I pant as he presses even harder against me. He shifts his hips, and his erection grinds against my stomach. My head tilts back, and a tiny moan escapes me.

A noise down the hall snaps our heads around. Barren stands there staring at us, his mouth parted. He blinks rapidly. The scent of oranges blossoms in the air. I can’t tell what he’s thinking. I don’t know if he wants to kill me for touching one of his alphas or hurt that his alpha is doing this.

I’m frozen for half a moment, and then I shove at Gold. This isn’t my alpha, not my omega. None of these are mine. What the fuck am I doing?

“Get off me.”

He turns away from Barren and focuses on me. “Go back to the city.” That hateful, bitter tone cuts deep inside, but I don’t let him see that he’s affected me.

Barren makes a sound, almost like a protest. I can’t look at him. It hurts, but I refuse to look away from Gold.
