He reaches out and snags my wrist. “You need to come with me now.”

“I-what?”

“Pack a bag. You’re staying at the manor for a few days.”

I blanch and stumble away from him. I don’t get far because he still has my wrist. Live with a house full of alphas and their sexy omega I have no ability to resist? No way in hell. “I can’t, no.”

“Red, there’s a massive storm coming.”

I shake my head. “I’ll be fine here.”

He growls at me, and I stiffen and stand my ground. “Barren is freaking out.” His face collapses in grief and guilt. “Please, not for us, for him.”

Guilt swamps me, I chew my bottom lip while I weigh my options. “Why would me staying here be dangerous enough that Barren’s freaking out?”

Gold lets go of my wrist. “This area floods, and it isn’t protected by the levees that the town is.”

My mouth parts, and I look around helplessly at all the work I've done over the last few days. “It's like the universe is trying to screw me.” I mutter bitterly.

“What?”

“Never mind. Can you give me a few minutes to pack and get this stuff safe?”

Gold shrugs. “No longer than twenty minutes.”

“All right. Fine.”

I run into my bedroom and start packing as much as I can. Clothes, essentials, any paperwork. I stare at the blankets and pillows and finally scoop them up, ignoring Gold’s keen eyes, and take them out to my car.

It takes me a few trips. I look around for Gold and find him securing the outside shutters. Finally, it’s done. My little cottage looks forgotten and lonely already.

“All right,” I say, resigned. “Let's go.”

Gold takes my hand, giving it a squeeze. “Thank you.”

I watch as he walks back to the car, wondering why me being safe gives him so much relief that his eyes shine.

We drive slowly; the wind is already picking up, and I curse myself for not checking the weather. The trees bend wildly, and I have to admit, I’m grateful to have Gold in the car ahead of me. I’ve never seen the forest like this. It’s intimidating and makes me aware of how little power I have and how small I am in the grand scheme of things.

I pull up in front of the manor. It's illuminated with yellow lights. Warm and inviting. Thunder cracks loudly, rumbling and rolling loud enough that it makes my ears ache. A moment later, the rain starts. I sit in my car, with butterflies, wondering what the alphas thought of this morning and what they think of me being here now.

“Stop being so fucking chicken,” I hiss at myself and smash my palm on the steering wheel.

I get out of the car, instantly getting soaked, and decide to leave everything until we get a break in the weather. I leg it across the yard, pausing when I get under the balcony to shake the water off and wring my hair.

Barren bounds out and picks me up, swinging me around, his face buried in my chest.

“Uh,” I look up and find a line of alphas staring at the pair of us.

My stomach plummets. Oh, shit.

Barren ignores them, setting me down and taking up my hand. He looks more carefree and relaxed, but not that same cocky guy I saw earlier today. He stares at his alphas, lifting his chin in, I frown, rebellion? Challenge? I glance at the alphas. Taylor is hiding a smile, Acton is staring off at the rain with his lips set in a straight line. Gold is the only one frowning, and it’s not directed at Barren, it’s solely directed at me.

“Have you eaten?” Jet asks politely.
