He cocks his head to the side with a small frown. “That was normal. Mild for him. It will get worse.”

I nod and look at the fireplace, but I don’t believe the words he’s saying. I search for something polite to say that won’t expose my anger. “I haven’t felt anything like that before.”

“What part?”

“All of it?”

“What part scared you so much you ran? Bar wanting you?” Taylor asks. I freeze as he leans forward slightly. Those grey eyes see straight through my mask. I shiver slightly and grip the glass tighter. “Or Jet wanting you?”

I cough and throw back the liquid to buy time. It burns, and my eyes water. I could lie, but he’ll smell it, I’m sure. “Jet.”

He leans forward, staring at me like I’m a puzzle he hasn’t figured out yet. Goosebumps cover my arms. I glance at the door. “You find it strange that alphas want you?”

“The only alphas that wanted me were looking to make a conquest.” I say bitterly and cross my legs, imitating his earlier pose. I’m not running.

“I see. And omegas?”

I worry my bottom lip and force myself to stop. Why does this man make me feel anxious? “The omegas that did like me had packs that didn’t, wouldn’t, or couldn’t accept me.”

“There have been female alphas before,” Taylor points out calmly. “You could have found someone.”

I take a minute to weigh the ramifications, but it only seems fair to show them just what they are dealing with. Especially since they’ve helped me out so much. I wince when I think of Gold. Fuck it, and fuck him.

I look up and let the mask fall off. “But none like me.”

Taylor inhales and slowly sits up. His eyes glitter as he takes me in. “Well, aren’t you pretty?”

I cock my head to the side and watch him curiously. I don’t miss the sleepy arousal in the air, the thick intensity of that lightning and rain scent. This alpha wants me as well. Even feeling how strong my dominance is underneath the mask, he still wants me. That wave of knowledge hits me hard in the chest, where all the pain and loneliness has been caged.

He stands up, crossing to kneel before me. Even on his knees, gazing up at me, he is so untouchable, so cold, like he’s made of ice. But I see the fire in those grey eyes. I yearn for it just as I want to run from it. “So you hide behind a mask and live a life where no one really sees you? Hide the sheer strength and dominance you have just to fit in?” He looks at me as if he knows all my secrets, I wonder if he does. Taylor Knight is a very dangerous man, and no matter how my stomach flutters to see him on his knees before me, I cannot forget that.

I shrug. “I don’t need to throw what I am around, Taylor.”

He grips my thumb, rolling my hand on my thigh until it’s palm up, and presses a kiss to the centre.

I lose my ability to speak as I stare down at him

“You should just be you and to hell with everyone else. You’d be amazed at the people you’d find on their knees wanting to just have a scrap of your attention,” Taylor whispers.

What the fuck does that mean? My heart’s racing, and my mouth is bone dry.

He crawls up my body and presses a chaste kiss to the corner of my lips before he stands and crosses back to his seat.

I let out a breath as soon as he gets clear, trying to brush the cobwebs of his spell off me.

“I think maybe it’s fate that we’re all here at the same time. Maybe it’s meant to be.” Taylor shrugs, picks up his glass, and starts drinking.

I sit quietly for a long time. There’s no awkward tension between us. I comfortably fall into my own thoughts. But a niggling worry has been eating at me.

“Will Barren be okay?” I wince at the high pitch tremble in my tone. “I hurt him.”

Taylor laughs. “He will be fine. He rushed. We told him to go slow. A threesome wasn’t on the cards for tonight. He will sulk, his alphas will punish him, and then tomorrow, he’ll be trying to find a new way to corner you.”

I scowl. “You make him sound like a…a…” I cut my words off, blushing.

Taylor smiles. What big teeth you have…

“A what, Miss Scarlet?”
