I’m getting attached. I know I am, but I’ve never felt this way. It’s intoxicating and alluring. But underneath Jet’s story was a message that they won’t trust again. I’m a visitor walking the path beside them, helping their omega and their alpha, only to then move off on my own journey.

I wrap my arms around myself, feeling the sting of rejection. It never gets easier. But I’m financially secure. I own that cottage. I don’t have anyone depending on me. Or relying on me. Just a pack of me and myself.

I look up, and Gold is gone. I remember how when he smiled; it was like the sun shining down on me. He laughed so joyously. He was insanely protective and fun. Waking me in the middle of the night and leading me out into the forest.

I rub my collar bone and walk back to the house. Taylor’s waiting for me by the back door. I follow him back to his office and sit down while he pours two glasses of brandy.

The space is filled with his belongings. The scent of him is strong in here. There’s a carpet on the floor, a small couch, and a wingback chair. A massive desk sits on one side with no clutter, and a small coffee table with three glasses and a brandy bottle are opposite.

“What’s your price?”

I shake my head. “My terms first.”

He looks startled for a second and then nods sharply. “Name them.”

“One. This farce will not continue for a day after three weeks.”

“Accepted. Next.”

“Two. No subterfuge. No lying, manipulation, or games. If you want something from me, simply say it.”

“Agreed. Next.”

I look away, biting my lip. “I want to…” I blush and take a breath, looking over his shoulder. “I want to have sex. Once. With someone.”

His eyebrows raise, and he stares at me hard. “That isn’t going to be a problem at all, Miss Scarlet.”

I shiver.

“My terms,” he says calmly. “One. At the end of three weeks, you will leave and never contact Pack Knight again. Not for any reason. You will walk away and become invisible.”

I wince and hesitate. Never see Barren again? But…No, I can help him and give him back his life, and then I can leave. I can do that. “Agreed.” I whisper.

“You will spend at least an hour each day with Bar.”

“Agreed.”

“You say no to anything you don't want to do or aren’t comfortable with.”

I jerk my head in a nod.

“I need to hear you say it, Scarlet.” His deep purr makes me shiver.

“Agreed.”

He sits back. “Now what do you want as your price?”

I sit there silently, thinking. “I want a blanket.”

He scowls. “Come again?”

“I want one of Bar’s blankets. His choice. To keep. To remember.” Tears burn in my eyes, making my vision hazy. “Are we done?”

I vaguely see him nod, and I get up and stalk towards the exit. I close the door and round a corner and lean against the wall, breathing hard.

What did I just agree to? Three weeks is all the time I get with them? A lifetime wouldn’t be enough.

I walk away, desperate to get away from Taylor. Rounding a corner, I bump into a large chest.
