“Doesn’t Gold-“

“He doesn’t talk about family. Only goes back to see his mother once a year, alone.” Bar says and somehow manages to get my jumper off. I’m not wearing anything but a black lace bra, and he studies it with such intense fascination that I feel myself blush.

“My dad is a beta. My mother was an omega. She left him when she found her pack. He worked in landscaping but never made a lot of money. It was okay when I was younger. I was alone a lot. Then he got married. Somehow, he found a beta woman who was exactly like him.”

Bar mouths at the lace, and I gasp, arching my back. A hot hand slides up my ribs and squeezes my breast.

“Keep talking,” he murmurs and takes my nipple into his mouth.

How am I supposed to keep talking? I can barely form a coherent thought?

“She had Gold already from a previous marriage. At first, I hated them, but then I didn’t. But they didn’t like that he was going to be an Alpha, you could tell with him even before he presented, but they could accept it. But me? No. They’re, at their hearts, traditionalists. So, they cut ties.”

He lifts his mouth, looking up at me. “I’m sorry, what? Did you say they cut ties just after you presented?”

I nod. “It was the last straw. I was this endless disappointment ruining everything for them.”

“So, you were alone in the world. You went to Gold, didn’t you?” His sure confidence is stunning and naïve.

I shook my head. “No. I went and got a job. Then I found a place to live.”

“Why didn’t you go to Gold?” Bar asks.

“Because…” Don’t you dare ruin his life, too. He deserves so much better than you. A pack he can be happy with. You stay away from our son. I don’t have an answer. I’m unwilling to tell Barren why I didn’t go to Gold, so I stay silent.

Bar gapes at me.

“What?”

“You were a kid.”

“So are lots of people who survive.” I shift uneasily.

Bar growls and pulls me up close to him. He wraps his arms around me and hugs me tight, kissing over the top of my chest. I wrap my arms around him, and we just sit like that. It should feel strange, but it feels like the most natural thing in the world. I realise he’s offering me comfort, with no strings or expectations, and tears prickle in my eyes. How am I going to leave this amazing man?

“What ya thinking?”

“I was thinking that I don’t remember doing this for a long time.”

“Doing what?”

“Just, like, hugging for no reason.”

Bar tilts his head back and stares up at me. He’s so beautiful it hurts. He could have been mine, in another life, in another world. Maybe he could have been mine. It makes my heart ache.

He frowns, and I lean down and kiss him before he can ask. Kissing the other alphas is different from kissing Bar. When I kiss him, it’s like turning a furnace on. The heat just takes off and spreads until I nearly lose who I am in it. I take control of the kiss, nipping his bottom lip and teasing him until he’s whimpering and thrusting up against me.

The door opens, and I pause, looking over my shoulder as Jet walks in. The alpha toes the door closed. He walks up behind me and frowns down at us.

I tense for judgment, for censorship.

“This looks uncomfortable.”

A second later, my bra falls loose. Bar’s eyes light up, and it’s gone before I can speak.

“You need to teach me that, Jet.” Barren purrs at the alpha. “Shit, you’re so fucking pretty. I’m going to play with these all the time.” I suck in a sharp breath when he tilts me back, leans forward, and sucks hard. It sends spirals of tingling pleasure straight to my aching core.

Jet raises an eyebrow, and I bite my lower lip, shaking my head at him and his mocking knowing eyes.
