I shudder and realise I’m covered with sweat. My breathing is laboured.

I glare in the direction Red went. She wants what he has. She’ll take it. Inhale, I can’t breathe properly, exhale, a loud roaring growl that sounds like the rush of the ocean.

Auburn red hair and gold-flecked eyes appear in my memories and snag my hair back, pulling me upright before his arms wrap around my chest, tight. So tight.

Real. Jet.

Another set of arms wrap around me. Acton purrs in my ear. Then there’s orange snatching my face, pressing kisses to my lips.

“It’s okay, Gold. We’re safe.” Bar murmurs.

But it’s not until Taylor walks into the room that the panic recedes. Calm Taylor, who hides the dangerous nature of who he is under layers of civility. He’s the strong granite strength I need. He will kill me before he lets me hurt the others.

He walks up to me now until he can see my face. He reaches out and touches my jaw. “You’re safe in this home, Gold. Come back now, and take your omega to his nest.”

I drag in a deep breath and force myself to come back. Step by painful step, I bring myself out of those memories. But the fear is too much, and the vortex of pain and screaming pulls me under.

It’s only when I’m lying on my back that I frown and wonder where the hell I am. I remember the panic, the fear, the memories, but not much else. I groan. I had another episode. I’m so fucking broken.

I’m staring at the roof when I realise there are dancing lights everywhere.

I roll and look around. I’m in the nest with my pack around me. All of them. Bar wraps himself around me as I study the new light shade and the balls of light it flickers around the room. Since that day, Barren hasn’t been able to abide colour in his room or nest.

But this isn’t colour. Exactly.

Its dancing squares of lights. I cock my head. Not the same as a disco ball, this is muted and bigger. Like stained glass.

“Scarlet found it for him.” Acton says gently. “He wouldn’t calm down. She looked from the doorway, picked it out, gave it to me, and left.”

I stare at the light, feeling strangely like I’ve done something wrong. I lay back, adjusting myself so Bar is laying on my chest, and I’m staring at the light.

The room doesn’t smell like sex. We’re all dressed. We’re all dressed and in the nest. What the fuck happened? The panic tries to come back, but Bar tightens his arm around me in his sleep.

Taylor and Acton stand up, exchanging a look with me, and then leave the nest. Jet sighs and moves in closer, resting his chin on Bars back so he can watch me.

“We won’t let anything happen again.”

I squeeze my eyes closed. “What if…”

“No!” Jet says firmly. “No what ifs. We won’t fail again.”

I sigh and let my head fall back, staring at the light dancing.

When I wake up later, Jet is lying there on his side, watching me.

“You didn’t need to stay.”

“Yes, I did.”

I humph and sit up, climbing to my feet and heading for the bathroom. We’d even redone the bathroom in black.

I get under the shower and wash the sweat and memories away.

“How did you keep Scarlet away?”

Jet snorts. “I love the assumption that we needed to keep her away. Scarlet worked on her computer, barely twitching for about four hours. Then she got up and made herself a sandwich, ate it on the porch, and then she went back to work.”

I scowl. “That's it?”
