“I was thinking that I told you to ignore Taylor.” I growl at her.

She looks at me and blows out her cheeks. “You did.”

“He is super protective of our pack. But that doesn’t mean or excuse him for being a dick.”

“It’s good. It’s good to have someone who cares so much. You’re all lucky.”

I glance at her and want to protest. She has people who care.

“Doesn’t justify him being a shitty person.”

“I’m not. I just…”

She trails off, and we sit in silence, bumping along the road. The sun will set in a couple of hours.

“What arrangement?” I ask suddenly. “In the office, Taylor said you had an arrangement?”

“Oh, it’s just the agreement to help Bar. I’ll leave in three weeks, and be out of your hair forever.”

My blood turns to ice in my veins. How could he do this to us? I’m going to kill him myself. “What if we don’t want you out of our hair?”

She shakes her head. “It’s not fair on any of us to continue this. I’m only doing it because I seem to be helping him, and he’s helping me, too.” The last part she says almost to herself.

“Bar won’t like this.” I don’t like this.

“I’m not his. He should be with his pack.” She says tightly.

I sit back, staring at the road and driving with a dangerous calm until we reach her house. She gets out of the car and smiles.

“Thanks for driving me.”

I can’t leave it like that. I get out of the car, slamming the door, walk over to her, and pick her up. She wraps her legs around me and stares down at me, depthless green that I can’t reach.

“What are you doing?”

“Taylor’s a fucking idiot.” I hiss, and then I grip her hair and pull her down for my kiss.

I can’t stay. I need to check on Bar and Acton and Gold. I need to plan. I let her slide down my body and then kiss her forehead.

“Don’t listen to Taylor.”

She nods her head but looks away from me. I could stand here and argue with her for hours, but I don’t think anything I could say will fix this, so I just hug her, trying to show her what she means to me.

“Rest and sleep well. I’ll pick you up tomorrow myself.”

She stands there, arms wrapped around herself as I drive away, still wearing just my t-shirt. I check the rearview mirror and stare until I’m too far away. Leaving her feels wrong. Everything screams to turn around and go get her. I slam my hand against the steering wheel in frustration.

It takes no time to get back to the manor, and I walk in, stalking back to Taylor’s office and push him up against the wall.

He doesn’t fight back, just stares at me. As cold as ice.

“You unbelievable, unconscionable prick. How could you say that to her?”

He snorts. “It’s the truth, Jet.”

“It was a deliberate slap, putting her back in her place.” I shout at him. “She’s been borderline in a rut for days, and seeing how protective she was of him, seeing her caring for him, you decide that’s a bad thing and just rip the rug out from under her?”

Gold is staring at the floor, his face expressionless. He clears his throat. “I have to go.”
