“Gold? Hurry up, I’ve got things to do.”

I frown when I’m pushed against the rock from behind. I struggle, but the hands are immovable. Gold wedges one of his thighs in between my legs. The fear and anger make the arousal sharp, potent. Whiskey smothers me in a more powerful wave than I’ve ever smelt it.

Taylor laughs.

Gold reaches up, gripping my wrists, and pins them together. I struggle. but it’s no use, he’s too strong, and I’m not prepared to actually hurt him. Not yet.

“You lied to me,” Gold growls.

“I didn’t! What?”

“You lied to me. You told me you had a pack.”

I shudder. “I think I implied I had a pack. I never actually said the words.”

“Godfuckingdamnit Red!” Gold roars, and then his weight is off me, and he spins me around and pins me again. “Taylor, fuck off.” Gold growls without taking his eyes from mine.

My heart crashes wildly against my chest. “Gold, please.”

“You be quiet.”

I snap my jaw shut, more out of fury than any desire to obey. We listen to the sounds of Taylor disappearing in silence.

“I need you to answer these questions. Can you do that?”

Gold still sounds enraged, but I nod my head.

“Did you run away from home?”

My mouth goes dry. “Yes, because they were going to sell me to a pack.”

Gold shudders, and I feel his temper grow darker. “Were you in that pack?”

I hesitate. “Technically, I said I was, but they never registered me as pack, and I was…” I trail off. “No, I guess I wasn’t pack.”

“Did you look for me?”

My eyes widen. “Every day for five years. But our parents made it clear you didn’t want contact with me.”

He growls.

“When I came to see you, did they tell you I was there?”

I didn’t think my shock could get any bigger. “You came? You found me? You were there?” If I’d just seen him once, just once, I would have followed him anywhere.

His eyes close. His grip on my wrists loosens until his hands slip away from me completely. “I’m sorry, Red.”

I cautiously close the distance between us and wrap my arms around him. “I’m sorry, too. I shouldn’t have listened when they said you hated me. I was just…young and scared.”

“It’s not okay. All this time. That’s how you’ve been living?”

I frown. I grip his face and snarl. His eyes pop open. “I have run an empire. Made lots of money, had dealings with very powerful people. I’m a very well-respected force, Gold. My life hasn’t been a complete waste.”

“We could have been together…” he trails off.

“No, we couldn’t. It never would have worked.” I whisper.

He stares at me, opening his mouth to deny it, but I press my fingers to his lips.
