Georgie didn’t want to have this conversation. She didn’t want to have to make this decision. In truth, she was scared. But she was more scared for Riggs and Robby than herself. Josh might be going crazy, but he’d cared about her for a good while. She didn’t believe he had it in him to hurt her. Sure, he might hire someone to hurt or kill someone for him, but she didn’t think he had it in him to do the deed himself.
And she was pretty sure she knew how to control him.
"And you’re not going to like it, but it’s how it’s going to be.” She quickly outlined her plan to go away with Josh for three days. It would be someone public and busy with a lot of people around. She’d be safe. And in that time, Naomie and Riggs’ family could arrange for him to be moved somewhere safe.
"And finally, before you start arguing, I'm going to do my way,” she concluded.
“Can I say I’m against this plan?”
“Yes.”
“And can I ask if you’re going to make sure to stay in touch so I’ll know you’re okay?
“Yes. I’m going to get a cheap prepaid phone and give it to you. I’ll call or text to it and pretend it’s work.”
“I still have reservations.”
“But you’ll do it. Get Riggs and Robby to safety, right?
“Yes.”
“Okay then. That’s settled.” Georgie didn’t want to talk or even think about it. Doing so made the “what if” monsters rise from the darkness. She had to steer clear of that. There was no reason for Josh to hurt her. He was just jealous of her affection for Riggs and wanted him all to himself. She’d try to make her case to him, be calm and sensible and hopefully when they returned, he’d find another woman to focus his attention on, and Riggs and Robby would be safe.”
Hopefully.
Chapter Eighteen
Six a.m., and all was well.Maybe I was wrong,Georgie thought. Two days passed without incident. There were no calls or unwanted visits from Josh. Georgie hoped he'd changed his mind, moved on, and had no more interest in her.
She pressed the brew button on the coffee maker, turned on the morning news on the television in the breakfast nook, and then poured herself a glass of ice water. Today was the day. Russell Walker flew back into town last night so he could make the flight back to Texas with Naomie, Riggs, and Robby. Naomie left Georgie's place last night to stay with Russell at the hotel. They'd all meet at the hospital, and Riggs would be released around eleven today. She planned on going to the hospital to see them off.
A knock at her back door had her thinking Naomie must have forgotten something. She hurried to open it, and the moment she saw who was on the other side, she tried to close it.
But Josh slammed one shoulder into the door, knocking it open and her back. Before she could recover from the jolt, he was inside the house.
"Josh, you need to leave. I have to be at the hospital in an hour and haven't even had coffee yet."
"Then we'll have coffee together," he said with a smile that looked threatening. "Right after I fuck you."
Georgie hated the bolt of fear that shot through her. Maybe it was the knife in his hand or and the hateful tone of his voice. "That's not happening," she took a step back.
"Oh, it's happening. Or I leave here, go to the hospital, and wait for the opportunity to slit that screaming infant's throat."
"Josh, you don't mean that."
"Don't I?" he smirked and indicated the television. "That was that bitch's mistake, too."
"What?" She had no idea what he was talking about.
"Not believing me."
The horror of it set in when she realized what was being reported. Another woman's body was found near the river. People weren't releasing details, but the report did say the woman had been raped and severely mutilated.
"No," she looked at Josh, not wanting to believe he was capable of such an act. "That's not who you are, Josh."
"It is unless you're mine."
What a horrifying statement. Georgie wanted to scream, run, and get out of the house and away from him. She inched backward, and he lunged at her, cramming the knife's point against her throat beneath her left ear. She knew too well what would happen if he stabbed her there.
