"Okay – let's see. Okay, the result is an instantaneous physical movement of the prosthesis in whatever manner the amputee intends. You don't have to think about moving because your unconscious reflexes are automatically converted into myoelectrical impulses that control the bionic limb."

"Seriously?"

"Seriously."

"And you can get me into wherever this place is."

"Oh, I'm going to get you in."

"That tone of voice makes me wonder if you're about to go to war yourself."

"No. But I will make it impossible for them to say no. I've offered to develop an improved IMES, a better algorithm, and I'm sweetening the pot with a donation for research."

"A donation?"

"I will give them the patent for the new IMES."

"Is that worth a lot?"

"It is."

"Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why would you do that?"

Naomie put the iPad aside and took Riggs' hand. "You know why. You and I are connected in a way I've never been with anyone, not even your dad. You're my brother, my best friend, in many ways, my other half. I'd trust you with my life without hesitation and give you mine without blinking.

"I love you, Riggs, and I'll do anything to see you on your feet, taking names and kicking ass. And damn it all, you'll dance with me the day I marry your dad and officially become part of the family. I won't settle for anything less."

"Well, when you put it that way, sign me up, girl."

"I was hoping you'd say that. We have everything arranged. We'll leave today, and tomorrow, you'll get started. Oh, and the beautiful redhead, Georgie? She's going to be your new PT. She's amazing, and as someone who's been through the program, she understands everything you'll be going through. You're going to hate her and love her."

"If she can get me where you think I can reach, I'll be in her debt."

"She will. Along with the surgeons, techs, and me. I'm going to be involved every step of the way."

"Looking out for me?"

"You better believe it."

Just then, the door opened, and Russell walked in, accompanied by Gunner and another man, who he assumed was a doctor. "Dr. Taylor?" the man asked and stepped over to shake her hand. "Tom Miller. It's an honor. I've read about your IMES and the success the team at BioNow is having."

"It's a pleasure, Dr. Miller, and thank you, but I'm only responsible for the IMES. The team at BioNow deserves credit for the remarkable breakthroughs they've achieved."

"Yes, and as you requested, I sent them all of Mr. Walker's records and received a call just minutes ago. After a thorough evaluation, they believe he will be a good candidate for what they indicated would be the next level in bionics."

"That's wonderful."

"Dr. Newman mentioned you would upgrade the IMES?"

"Yes."

"I look forward to reading about it. Now," he handed her a thick folder. "Copies of everything that has medically transpired since Mr. Walker's injury. If you have any questions, please call. At least for questions regarding what we've done here. Before his arrival, Mr. Walker was in the care of Navy medics, most notably Mr. Hale."

Naomie looked at Gunner. "You're a medic?"
