“Works for me.” I am starting to wonder if we’ll ever venture outside. I swear the staff at the lodge already give me funny looks whenever they deliver room service. “I forgot. I have a gift for you.”

Lizzie shoots up and stares at me. “Cooper Roger McKenzie, you did not get me a bloody Valentine’s gift. You better not have.” Yes, we still officially hate Valentine’s Day.

“No, I didn’t. We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, correct?” I wink at her. She gives me a suspicious look, but then takes the rectangular box from me. Lizzie lifts the lid and pulls out the pieces of paper.

“I promise to make sure Sally’s batteries are always charged,” she reads out the first card. “I promise to support you in all of your business ventures. I promise to never celebrate Valentine’s Day with you.” She looks up from all the cards in her hand. “Coop, what is this?”

“These are my promises to you and I’ll keep them all. There are also a few blank pieces of paper in the box, so you can write down more things you want me to promise. But I will only keep to them if you promise me one thing in return.”

“Which is?”

“To become my wife.” I hold out the ring I have been hiding in my palm.

“Wha…What?” she stutters.

“Lizzie, you’re my best friend, but you’re also the love of my life. I don’t want to go a day without you. Will you please marry me?”

She stares at me for a second.

“And we will never have to celebrate Valentine’s Day?” she asks.

“Never.”

“Then yes,” a smile lights up her face. I pull her into my arms and slide the ring onto her finger. And just like that she has made me the happiest man on the planet.
