I wrap my legs around his waist, pulling him closer to me. I need him as close as possible, need to feel every inch of him moving in and out of me.

Coop’s hands are on either side of my head, supporting his weight as he thrusts into me. He’s kissing me like his life depends on it, and I’m kissing him back with just as much desperation.

I can feel that familiar pressure building again, but this time it’s different. This time it’s not just physical; it’s emotional too. It’s the realisation that this is so much more than just sex—that maybe we never really were just friends. That there was a deeper connection all along.

“Coop,” I gasp, breaking the kiss. “I’m… I’m so close.”

“Give me your orgasm, baby. Come for me,” he groans through clenched teeth. That’s all it takes for me to explode again. The pleasure radiates through my body into every nerve ending and all my senses are heightened.

“Coop!” His movements become even more frantic when I call his name and he buries his face in the crook of my neck, groaning against my skin as he finds his release.

The sound of his moan combined with the feeling of him coming apart in my arms sends aftershocks through me. I dig my nails into his back as I ride out my orgasm, both of us panting and sweaty and spent.

He collapses on top of me a few seconds later, our bodies still connected as we try to catch our breath.

“Are you okay?” he asks after a moment, lifting himself up on his elbows to look down at me.

“More than okay,” I reply with a smile.

We lie there in comfortable silence for a while before Coop finally pulls out and rolls onto his back beside me. He takes off the condom and ties it off before tossing it in the bin by the bed. I feel empty with him gone and I don’t like the distance between us.

Then he turns towards me—his eyes filled with something I can’t quite name—and pulls me into his arms.

“I love you,” he whispers against my hair. “I’ve loved you for so long, Lizzie.”

“Coop, I—”

“No, don’t say it back. This is all new for you. But I just needed to say it out loud. I don’t have any expectations; just whatever you decide, please promise me that you’ll talk to me. If you want to just be friends, I can go back to being friends. If you want to give this a try and see where it goes, I’m here for it. Just whatever happens, I need you in my life in whichever way I can have you.”

He gently strokes a strand of hair from my face.

I look up at him, my heart swelling in my chest. “Coop, I… I’m not sure where this has come from. It somehow feels like it’s always been there. Maybe I just didn’t allow myself to feel what you do for me because I always thought you were so out of my league.”

“Baby, nobody is out of your league. Any man would be lucky to have you in their life. You are smart, caring, funny and incredibly beautiful. You have a life energy I’m in awe of and make the darkest moment feel a little bit brighter.” Okay, this is the moment where I need to swoon a little. His eyes are fixed on me as if to make sure I know his words are not just words but what he actually feels.

He smiles down at me and kisses the top of my head before we both settle back against the pillows.

“Coop?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“If we keep doing this, I think I can retire Sally.” His loud belly laugh echoes from the walls.

“Or maybe we invite her along one day,” he chuckles.

“Kinky.” I snuggle into his arms and switch off the bedside lamp.

His steady breaths tell me he’s fallen asleep. As I lie there in his arms, listening to the beat of his heart, I can’t help but think that I don’t want to go back to being just friends.
