He came to awareness with her ass in his hands, their bodies slick with sweat, her hair damp around her forehead.

He lowered her carefully to the sofa and leaned over to kiss her, stroking the hair near her temple.

She brought her hands to his face and sank into the kiss.

When they pulled apart, she was looking at him intently. “Is that what it’s like?” she asked. “In the playroom?”

He considered his answer, wanting to be truthful but not wanting to scare her. “Like that times a hundred. For you, the playroom is total submission.”

“And for you?” she asked.

“Total domination.” She looked stricken, but her lips were parted with desire. He understood, knew how fear and desire sometimes worked together in ways no one wanted to talk about. “But there’s no rush. We can play when you’re ready. Or not at all.”

“You’d give it up?” she asked. “To be with me?”

He stared down at her, the answer surprisingly easy. “Yes.”

RUBY

She was half-asleep, deliciously warm and satiated against Roman’s chest, when the buzzing of a phone wrenched her from the darkness behind her eyelids.

She sat up and looked sleepily at Roman. “Is that me?”

“Me,” he muttered, reaching for his phone on the coffee table.

They’d fallen asleep on the sofa after fucking a second time and their clothes were strewn all over the floor where Roman had left them when he’d first pulled them off. There hadn’t been a blanket — Ruby was constantly discovering little comforts that were missing in Roman’s apartment; what kind of person didn’t have a blanket handy for couch naps? — and they’d dozed off wrapped in nothing but each other.

Now she was naked and exposed, absent the warmth of Roman’s body, and she hunted for her T-shirt while he answered the call.

She hadn’t gotten a look at the screen on his phone, but she assumed it was business as he emitted a series of one-word questions and answers while looking sexy as hell, his scarred, muscled body on full display, massive cock half-hard between his enormous thighs.

“You’re sure?” he asked whoever was on the phone. He listened, then said, “Thank you.”

“Who was that?” she asked, snuggling up against his side. She was warmer with her T-shirt on but not nearly as warm as she’d been with Roman’s arms wrapped around her.

“Damian,” Roman said. “His people got a line on Adam.”

She pulled back and looked up at him, her heart thumping hard in her chest. “Does he have Olivia with him?”

It wasn’t the first question she’d planned to ask, not because she didn’t want to know but because voicing the darkest fear of her heart — that Adam would grow frustrated with full-time parenthood, that he might hurt Olivia, or worse — had seemed like bad luck.

But it just flew out of her mouth and Roman didn’t seem surprised by it.

“Security cam caught him with a little girl yesterday,” Roman said. “She’s still with him.”

She jumped off the couch, would have made a beeline for her keys if she had a car. “Where are they?”

“New Orleans.”

ROMAN

Roman sat in the back of the Land Rover with Ruby, watching the city pass by outside. He’d wanted to come to New Orleans with her alone — had wanted to leave Max in New York to keep an eye on things — but Max had appealed to Roman’s better judgment.

More specifically, Max had appealed to Roman’s reason that two men were better than one protecting Ruby in such close proximity to Adam.
