“Yes.” He thought of the St. Andrew’s cross in the playroom, the ball gags, the plugs, the floggers that were more than just toys, that left marks when used properly. “Sometimes more so.”

She shivered a little and he wondered if it was with pleasure or fear.

Maybe both.

He bent his head to kiss her neck, tasted salt and scented bathwater and the remnants of her perfumed bath gel.

Wanted to eat her whole.

“It was good,” she said softly, like she was confiding a secret. “Like… really really good.”

His cock stirred against her ass. “I’m glad you thought so.”

She twisted to look at him, the bathwater sloshing with her movements. “Was it as good for you?”

She was eager to please him in bed. A born submissive.

He placed his hand against her cheek and looked into her eyes. “‘Good’ isn’t the word I’d use, Ruby. You were fucking magnificent.”

She beamed.

Fuck. Who was this woman who made his cock hard and his heart melt at the same fucking time? And how would he ever live without her?

She reached up to run her hand through his hair, water dripping off her arm as she looked into his eyes. “I love you, you know.”

The surprise of it almost took his breath away. “You don’t have to— ”

She placed a hand over his mouth. “I know no one ever tells you to shut up, but… shut up, Roman.” She smiled. “I’ve loved you since I saw the room you made for Olivia. I just don’t know…” She sucked in a breath and shook her head. “Idon’tknow what it means. I don’t know what to do with it. But I want you to know it’s true, and I want you to know before tomorrow, because I love you, and that will be true regardless of what happens tomorrow.”

“Can I talk now?” he asked, his words muffled behind her hand.

She removed her hand from his mouth. “You may.”

He pulled her head in for a kiss, memorizing the softness of her lips, the slide of her wet body against his in the water, this moment when she was still his.

He broke the kiss to look at her, both of them breathing hard, Roman more than ready to be inside her again. “I love you too.” He stared into the blue-green sea of her eyes. “And tomorrow we’re getting Olivia back.”

RUBY

She sat in the car and watched the door of the motel room across the parking lot, feeling exposed even though the SUV had tinted windows and there was no way Adam would be able to make her out from such a distance, especially in the dark.

Plus there was the big man next to her, in the driver’s seat. His name was Rurik and he’d arrived that morning, a favor from the man named Lyon in Chicago, which according to Roman, didn’t touch all the favors Lyon still owed him.

“Where are they?” she muttered.

Roman and Max had taken another SUV and gone their own way, planning their approach to the motel from another direction.

“They’ll be here soon,” Rurik said.

There was no trace of worry in his accented voice, as if they were waiting for Roman and Max to return from an errand at the grocery store, like they might appear at any moment holding a bag filled with milk and bread instead of carrying Ruby’s daughter.

She’d been intimidated by Rurik at first. He was older — in his fifties maybe — but he was still huge, as tall as Roman although not quite as big. But it was his silence that had unnerved her the most, the way he looked at her without emotion, sat next to her, as silent as a stone, in the car.

Still, Roman had entrusted her safety to Rurik, which was good enough for Ruby.

Honestly she was just happy Roman had relented and allowed her to be present when they went in for Olivia. He hadn’t wanted to allow it first — too dangerous, he’d said — but Ruby had made the case that her probably already-traumatized daughter wouldn’t be relieved to see two giant men break into the room she shared with her father, wouldn’t necessarily be relieved when they took her from him.
