A mind-numbing rage propels me towards him. I can’t think through the agony squeezing my airways. Can’t breathe. All I know is someone needs to pay for this, and since Barnabas is already dead, his second-in-command will have to do.

I shove my entire arm, covered in coarse black fur, against his neck, cutting off his air supply, but he simply stares at me blankly. Those blue eyes of his—so much like my sweet mate’s—hold my own. But while Aliana’s always glimmer with mischief and warmth, his are an icy tundra, devoid of any emotion.

“I’m going to kill you,” I rasp as something wet touches the corner of my lips.

It takes me a second too long to realize it’s a tear.

Am I…crying?

I’ve never cried before.

The monster doesn’t even react to my threat as he continues to stare at me apathetically. But his impassive expression only infuriates me further.

His daughter isdead.

Dead.

Dead.

And he doesn’t even fucking care.

With a roar, I swing my claw at his head.

THE GROTESQUE

In all myyears of existence, I’ve never cared enough about anybody the way I care for Aliana. The only creature that managed to weasel her way into my heart was Fluffy. But besides her, there was no one.

Until Aliana.

I glance down at the woman clutched in my arms. With her streaked snow-white hair, haunting eyes, and a smile that never fails to make me weak at the knees.

But just now, that hair is tinted red with blood, her eyes are vacant, and her smile is nowhere to be seen. Her parted lips seem to be mocking me—they promise a smirk or a witty retort she’ll never make again.

I half expect her to sit up and demand to know why we’re all huddled around her like overbearing mother hens. She’ll then check in on each and every one of us and ensure we’re okay.

But she doesn’t move.

“The entire city’s destroyed.” Uni’s voice drags my attention up to him, where he stands at the window, overlooking the world below.

All I can see are white-frosted waves lapping at the first floors of all the skyscrapers and eating away at trees. Monster screams and roars sound in the distance, but it doesn’t matter.

Nothing matters anymore.

We fought for this new world to be with our mate, but now our mate is dead.

And soon, I’ll join her. I have no intention of living in a world where she doesn’t exist.

Somewhere behind me, Dev begins to fight with Tennious, but it’s background noise. In one ear and out the other.

I place my forehead against Aliana’s, hating how unnaturally cold her skin is. How pale.

“I’m sorry, my beloved,” I whisper huskily. “I’m sorry you couldn’t see this new world you fought so hard for. I’ll do what you couldn’t—I’ll make this world safe for the humans. Then, I’ll join you.”

My tears brand her smooth skin—imprinting my promise onto her flesh.

Soon, my love.
