But I’m so fucking weak when it comes to her, after all, and my body doesn’t always get the memo my brain has sent out.

“We should start heading in that direction,” Creep agrees, oblivious to the direction my thoughts just went.

He turns on his heel and begins to walk down the street, and all I can think about is how easy it would be to slice his head straight from his body. One problem would be taken care of.

Yet I know Aliana will never forgive me.

Hell, I’ll never forgive myself.

Since when do monsters give a damn about being selfish?

Why does this have to be such a clusterfuck?

I’ve just taken a step after Creep when a low moan drags my attention back to the rubble. A frown takes over my face as I freeze, straining my ears.

Another moan.

“Dev?” Creep asks curiously, standing directly beside one of the numerous shadows lining the sidewalk. No doubt, he plans to portal us directly to Tesq’s home.

I stalk towards where I heard the noise, grab the huge piece of machinery sitting there, and fling it to the side like it’s nothing but cardboard.

An unfamiliar monster with neon-green skin, yellow, cat-like eyes, and two vampiric teeth extended, lies broken and bleeding on the ground. Pain splays across his face as he whimpers, blood cascading from a wound on his head.

I sniff the air and quickly determine that he’s a Four—not the lowest of monsters in regards to power but definitely not one of the ringleaders of this fiasco.

Still…

A cold, conniving smile twists up my lips as I stare at the beast before me.

“What do we have here?” I purr.

The monster whimpers in terror.

As he should.

ALIANA

The two ofus—three of us? Fuck, I don’t even know anymore—stick to the shadows as we traverse the unfamiliar streets in the direction of the subway line. I know that’s where I need to go if I have any hope of reconnecting with my mates. I can’t simply wait around for them to rescue me.

Besides, they’re not the “knight in shining armor” type of monsters. More like the “rip the guts from your enemies’ bodies and eat them while you watch and try not to vomit” type.

“Where, exactly, are we going?” Empty and Chase have been mostly silent this entire walk, though I swear I hear garbled muttering more times than I care to admit.

Empty Man. Empty. Em. I decide to shorten his moniker since I’m flip-flopping between the two men so much.

I don’t answer as I stealthily duck around the corner of what once was a gas station and ensure the streets are empty. Only when no monsters come scurrying out of the gloom do I gesture Em forward—and itisEm. That sarcastic, accented drawl could never be confused with Chase’s deep, silky, baritone voice.

“Somewhere safe,” I respond at last, hurrying across the street and towards one of the staircases that lead to the subway system.

If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say we’re on the opposite end of the city from where Tesq lives.

Great. That will be a trek. And after our long sojourn through darkness just ended too. Still, it’ll probably be safer for the two of us to walk underground than remain out in the open where anyone can see us.

“You know, I’m not sure I appreciate the two-word, cryptic answers,” Em continues, not bothering to lower his voice.

Either he’s oblivious to the danger we’re in or overconfident in his abilities to protect me.
