I look at Danil, who shakes his head. I look in just outside of the door and see his gun lying there.

A fierce protectiveness comes over me, and I walk over to the gun and pick it up. It’s heavier than I imagined it would be, but I move to the doorway, where I see Peter with his weapon trained on Kervyn.

The dirty rat bastard.

I hold the gun in both hands, lift it, and shoot Peter from behind.

Kervyn looks at me with wide eyes. He always seems so calm and collected. Not now.

Peter’s body drops to the ground. I hit him in the neck with a second shot. Kervyn quickly goes around and takes Peter’s gun, shooting him in the head.

“Don’t shoot me,” Kervyn says as he approaches me. I slowly lower the gun and back away.

“Danil,” I exclaim, turning around and kneeling beside him.

“Put pressure on his wound,” Kervyn says.

The door bangs open, and Luka comes running in. “I heard gunshots. Who the fuck? What? Danil!”

“Get the doctor,” Kervyn says, kneeling on Danil’s other side. “We need to take him to get seen.”

Danil looks at me with a slight smile. “You almost shot my brother. That would have been funny.” He suddenly goes limp, and I look up at Kervyn.

“He passed out from blood loss. Luka will phone the doctor now. Mind out of the way and let Luka and I take him to the car and get him there. It’ll be faster.”

I move away, and Luka and Kervyn lift Danil into their arms to carry him out. I look at Peter's dead body and shake my head. Kervyn was right. It wasn’t Danil who betrayed us.

I get washed up and changed and wait around, trying not to bother Kervyn for updates. Eventually, Currie and Leon come in, and I stand up.

“They want us to take you to Danil’s house.”

“Is he?” I ask.

“He’ll be fine, ma’am,” Leon says. He leads me to the car, and in no time, I’m in Danil’s room, where he is lying propped up. He looks at me as I come in.

“Hail the conquering queen,” he says, grunting slightly.

“Don’t talk. It hurts,” Kervyn says with a chuckle. He walks to me. “Lucky you came home.”

“Lucky I made a decision or an illusion of one.” I grin.

“I like her when she’s cheeky,” Danil says loudly before groaning.

“They pulled the bullet out of him, and he’s kind of high on painkillers,” Kervyn says softly. “So you made an illusion of a choice? What did you choose?”

“I choose to be in a relationship with you. I want to be part of your family, and I want to be a queen. I love you more than anything.”

Kervyn smirks and then leans down and kisses me, tenderly at first but then passionately. When we break, Danil clears his throat. “Thanks for helping save my life, but I’m exhausted.”

“Let’s go home,” Kervyn says, taking my hand and kissing it. “Besides, my mother is going to be here soon.”

By the time we’re home, the house is already clean, and the guards are back in place. Luka is standing, waiting for us, with a serious look. “I don’t know how he got past security, Kervyn. I’ll have all the men checked again.”

“Relax, Luka. He was smart, and he took advantage of a chaotic situation.” Kervyn pats Luka on the shoulder. “Go home and get some rest.”

“Your things are upstairs, Penny,” Luka says.

I smile. “Okay, you guys finish talking while I unpack into my new room.”
