The thought comes through jokingly, but a small voice in the back of my mind tuts at me for falling blindly as if knowing that I’m already wrapped around Darian’s finger.

“Has anyone told you that you’re the best recently?” I smirk at him and take a bite of sausage, the flavors exploding in my mouth and I drop my forehead against the back of my hand in an effort to savor the taste.

Darian laughs softly, “No one that isn’t covered in fur and can’t currently speak English. Since it’s you, however, I’ll take the appreciation with particular gratitude.”

My cheeks burn as I raise my head, avoiding direct eye contact.

Without missing a beat, I reach out and snag a crispy strip of bacon, reveling its smoky flavors.

“So have we gotten any more info on any more amulets?”

Darian finishes chewing his bite of food slowly, before finally meeting my gaze.

“We did.” He offers, his voice low as he takes another bite of his food, creating a brief pause in the conversation.

“And?” I press.

“And… it’s around an hour’s drive from here.” His evasive response raises my blood pressure.

I narrow my eyes at him.

“Darian, just tell me.”

He lets out a resigned sigh, “It’s in a cemetery. A large one. We will go tonight and see if we can find it.”

There’s a pause, and I feel his intense gaze fixed upon me, “I don’t know what to expect there. We may be there for at least a few hours once we know where it is.”

The explanation seems to be enough at the surface but suspicion tugs at my mind, nagging at me that there’s something he’s worried about that has nothing to do with the cemetery.

He’s been acting strange since I woke up.

With a nod, I return my attention to the breakfast in front of me, my mind racing.

That’s one of the few silver linings of anxiety and overthinking. If you’re imaginative and proactive, it allows you to anticipate various scenarios before they unfold.

While many people view it as a negative trait, I’ve developed a silent appreciation how prepared I’ve been when situations align closely with my envisioned outcomes.

I suppose some might refer to it as intuition, but regardless, it’s always been a superpower in my eyes. Personally, I’ve always craved explanations to make sense of things and just going off gut feelings requires little to no logic. If you can’t rationalize what’s happening then you’re either wrong or uninformed.

That’s why magic has been a source of frustration for me.Magic isn’t tangible, something you can examine under a microscope. You can’t hold it in your hand or perceive it with the naked eye.

And if you haven’t experienced it, you rely on theory to rationalize it.

Darian stays occupied for the next few hours before loading the SUV with a shovel and retreats into his office. I can faintly hear his hushed conversation on the phone, growing increasingly tense and curiosity gets the better of me. I peek through a crack in the door, catching a glimpse of him with his gaze fixed on the computer screen before he starts typing.

What ishe not telling me?

Chapter 39

As the daylight wanes, casting a golden glow on the horizon, the tension radiating from Darian is palpable.

He appears on edge as if a single misstep could throw him into a tailspin.

His restless movements send my own anxiety swirling as I approach the apartment door.

“So, what’s the plan?” I cringe internally as my voice cracks.

“We will enter normally. If security stops us early on, we’ll say we’re visiting your great aunt, Liza.” I raise an eyebrow, waiting for him to continue. “If all goes well, we should be able to retrieve the amulet within the next six hours.”
