How did I end up here?

What happened in the garage?

I recall getting a text about cargo, but nothing more.

Blair wouldn’t be that foolish to have betrayed me, not with the force that binds us both together.

Frowning deeply, I rub the soreness at the back of my skull before pushing to my feet unsteadily as my legs tremble beneath me. Approaching the door. I grasp the handle and twist, only to find it locked.

My jaw clenches.

Thoughts of Blair, once again, creep into my mind.

She wouldn’t have done this, would she?

The uneasy feeling that had been simmering in the back of my mind intensifies, fueling suspicions that I had tried to push aside.

Turning my attention to the room, and my eyes scan the surroundings, landing on a piece of paper placed deliberately on the dresser.

I approach it and carefully pick it up.

Unfolding the note, I read the words scrawled across the paper.

Caspian,

I apologize for the manner of which I deceived you. I dutifully accept the honor of releasing you from your banishment and freeing you of the burdensome act of restoring magic to this world. I will take this final task upon myself thereby sparing you from the weight it carries. Please forgive me, and know that by the time you read this, it shall be done.

Blair

A sense of dread and horror courses through my veins as I absorb the words scrawled on the paper.

With no immediate way to gauge if magic has been restored a foreign sense of panic sends me sprinting toward the door.

I grip the handle tightly, twisting and wrenching with all my strength.

Despite the resistance, fueled by panic and sheer will, I manage to break the knob, forcefully swinging the door open.

One singular thought echoesin my mind.

Lara.

Chapter 51

Lara

The day after the convention passes in silence, with no communication from Caspian.

If Darian worries he masks it well, as he seizes the opportunity to teach me how to ride a motorcycle in deserted parking lots nearby.

With each passing day that Tammy doesn’t respond, doubts begin to creep in regarding Caspian’s commitment to releasing her.

The radio silence from both has concern nagging at the back of my mind.

I retrieve my phone and power it on, feeling a frown form as I discover a missed message from Claire.

Claire:Hi Lara. I’m beginning to get concerned that we still haven’t met recently. I’d like to put something on your calendar soon to catch up. Let me know, thanks.

I let out a weary sigh, my fingers hesitating over the keyboard as I type out several messages, only to delete them. Finally, I settle on a vague response, hoping it will suffice for now.
