Caspian’s face hardens as he glances down to the table, nodding slightly as he speaks.

“It is more than likely he did, that’s why I’m running with the assumption that my brother has her somewhere and is waiting to use her as bait.”

My veins turn to ice, buzz forgotten.

“She’ll be alive, Lara.”

I lift my gaze to meet his, “Alive is not the same as being healthy or thriving.” I whisper, knowing full well the difference.

The waitress brings out the burgers and places them in front of us and hesitates for a moment. “Another round of drinks, please.” She flicks her gaze from Caspian to me and I hold her stare, “And another round of tequila.”

She nods and walks to the bar, I glance at Caspian who is assessing me with a raised brow.

“For good measure,” I say with an affirming nod.

He chuckles and we dig in to our lunch.

Chapter 22

We finish the last of our meal with idle chatter, and as we are about to leave, I sway. Feeling more than a slight buzz, Caspian’s hand moves to my elbow automatically, steadying me.

I toss him a grateful smile, “Thanks.”

He nods, moving around to the aisle to walk out with me as the waitress approaches us to say goodbye. As she passes, I notice her shake Caspian’s hand, and she slides a piece of paper into it.

Jealousy rears its ugly head again, this time accompanied by anger and fueled by Jose Cuervo, almost makes me act out on the spot.

Oh, I’m going to jail. Good thing orange suits me.

Caspian pauses, he grabs my arm to stop me from walking away, and lifts the piece of paper up between him and the waitress.

She blanches and glances nervously to each of us.

“This doesn’t look like a receipt.” He frowns innocently and unfolds it.

Son of a bitch knows exactly what it is.

I snort as Caspian chokes down laughter, and the waitress’s face flashes to me with anger etched on it.

He pretends to struggle to read it, and shows it to me, then back to her.

I bite the inside of my cheek to keep from bursting out laughing. “Ah, I’m sorry I don’t understand binary that well. Never did well with computers. What is this supposed to be?”

Laughter bubbles up in me and I can’t hold it down anymore. My chest heaves and tears spring to my eyes with pained restraint.Caspian’s face is pure mischievous amusement, while the waitress is glaring at me as if I just kicked her child.

She scoffs, stomping away like an angry toddler while I fight to control my laughter. A few patrons who observed the scene are also chuckling before they go back to their meals.

Caspian’s head tilts, and he stares at me for a long moment, as if debating whether he should say something.

He probably shouldn’t.

“Orange would look good on you but you’re not going to jail any time soon.”

I freeze and my entire body feels like it’s made of molten lava.

Oh god, I said that out loud.

He smirks at me, “You did.”
