Ethan lifted a single brow, not missing the underlying sharp tone to her voice. What was more, they were planning for a wedding. Wasn’t Becca supposed to be here to have fun? Maybe all citygirls were cold and calculating. Either that, or Katrina really had the worst luck in making friends.

Becca reached for the roses that she’d left on her seat and held them out to him. “You want these ba?—”

“Keep them,” he cut her off. “I don’t have any use for them.” He nodded to the house. “You good from here? Or do you need help with your suitcase.”

Her smile threw him off guard. “I’m a big strong woman. I think I’m more than capable of taking my duffle upstairs.”

He nodded, then got back in his truck to head to the wranglers’ cabin. So much for romance.

CHAPTER THREE

“Oh wow!”Katrina gasped.

Becca glanced up as her friend slipped into the bedroom she’d call home for the summer.

Katrina pushed the door closed behind her in a flurry. “You and Ethan—why didn’t you tell me!” She hurried across the room and threw her arms around Becca in a tight hug before leaning back and offering Becca a chagrined smile. “Sorry about all the times I complained about him. I didn’t know! Congratulations!”

A sigh burst from Becca’s chest. She’d figured something like this would happen, only she’d hoped she could prolong it since Katrina’s attention would be stolen by her newly engaged friend.

Becca was even hoping that Tina would monopolize Katrina’s time so she could figure out a game plan. She didn’t even have Ethan’s number—which she’d realized as soon as he’d pulled away from the house.

Now how were they supposed to match up their stories?

This was a mess—one Tina would have a hey-day over if they got caught.

Katrina scooted back and sat on the edge of one of the twin beds. The other one was reserved for another guest who was planning on arriving in a couple weeks. “I’m so happy for you,” she pressed. “Really, I am.”

“We’re not even at the congratulations level yet. It’s not like we’ve even known each other all that long. I met him at that engagement party, for heaven’s sake. We’ve just been chatting a little. That’s all.”

“I’d say it’s pretty serious. If he was willing to come pick you up and bring you flowers, it has to be serious.” Katrina grinned like the Cheshire cat. “So… tell me what’s happening.”

“Nothing.” Becca threw her arms up in exasperation. “We’re just talking.”

“Talking,” Katrina drawled. “Sure.”

Becca motioned to the door. “I wasn’t joking when I said I wanted to get to bed early. I don’t even know how you’re here. Wasn’t Tina wanting to divulge all the nitty gritty details of her fiancé?”

“Of course she was. But I figured she’d be doing that every single day leading up to the wedding. And I also know that you aren’t the kind to overshare. It’s just not who you are.”

Becca smiled at her friend. “Well, then I guess you know what I’m going to say next.”

“Yep. You’re gonna tell me to get out and we’ll have time to gossip later—only later might not actually come.”

Becca laughed in spite of herself. “Exactly. You and I both know that we’ll have plenty of time to talk about what is definitely not happening between me and your cousin.”

“I just have one question.”

She groaned. “Kat. Nothing has happened. I don’t know how else?—”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were talking?”

Her mouth snapped shut and her eyes widened slightly. “What?”

“Usually, you tell me when there’s someone you’re interested in. By the looks of it, you two are definitely interested in each other. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have brought you flowers, and you wouldn’t have held his hand.” Katrina raised her brows suggestively. “There’s something you’re not telling me, and it’s fine if you want to keep it to yourself for a little while, but I fully expect the complete rundownbeforethe wedding.” She got to her feet. “By the way, I think Tina is totally jealous.”

That got Becca’s attention. “Why do you say that?”

“Because she couldn’t stop talking about how she didn’t believe the two of you were actually a thing. She said it didn’t make sense.”
