I turned around to see Christian. “Naw. Fuck naw.”

“You had no way of knowing, man. Don’t be hard on yourself.”

“Man, what if I had fucked her? I wouldn’t have been no better than Avery. I’m not a fucking pedophile, but I was physically attracted to that lil girl. What that shit say about me?”

“You ain’t him, J. You far from being him. She built like a grown ass woman. Nothing about her said teenager Saturday night, not even her face. I would have guessed that she was around twenty-three or so.”

“You can’t tell nobody about this shit.”

“You don’t have to worry about that. It will be between the three of us,” he said as I washed my hands then my mouth.

I didn’t know how I would get through the game with her hopping around, cutting flips and shit. Christian clapped my back as we left the restroom, and said, “I got’chu, bruh.”

I nodded and made my way back to the bleachers. Uncle Storm was giving me the side-eye, and I knew he had something slick to say, as usual. “I told that lil girl to keep it pushing because you damn near thirty.”

I rolled my eyes. “Nigga, I’m twenty-three.”

“Whatever. Same thing. Either way, her sixteen-year-old ass need to be looking at Rylan or Jacob, not you.”

“Right.”

I knew he would notice. Nothing got by his ass. Uncle Jasper slid down to the bleacher I was seated on, and said, “We’ll smoke when we leave here. You look like you need it. She duped your ass. I’ll let you tell me how later.”

I lowered my head. Uncle Jasper was someone I didn’t mind talking to. I knew it would stay between us, but I still wasn’t sure if I was comfortable telling him this. As I stared across the way, my anger started to consume me as I watched her with her pom poms. Her eyes met mine, and she quickly looked away, doing her best to avoid my gaze. She didn’t have shit to be worried about. I would walk right by her like her ass was invisible.

The problem now was that I knew I would be way too careful, going overboard to assure this wouldn’t happen again. No fucking body was going to catch me slipping, making me feel like I was just a chip off the old fucked-up block. She taught me a valuable lesson. If they weren’t family, they couldn’t be trusted.

CHAPTER1

JAKARI

THE PRESENT…

“And the new mayor of Big City Nome, Texas is Seven Storm Henderson!” Uncle WJ exclaimed, like Uncle Storm had won some kind of prize.

That fool put on his Stetson and tipped his hat to the people in the diner who had come to the celebration, mostly family and a few friends. “There’s a new sheriff in town. Get ready, because I refuse to hold back and spare anybody’s pitiful feelings.”

“Storm, when have youeverspared anybody’s feelings? You’ve always been on some ‘fuck yo’ feelings’ type shit,” Uncle Jasper said, causing everyone in attendance to laugh.

“First of all, you will address me as Mr. Mayor or Brother Mayor. Secondly, I spare yo’ feelings every day when I don’t say shit about some of the shit you be wearing. Thirdly, I ain’t neva been on the type of time I’m about to be on. We gotta whip Nome into shape and make it great again,” he said with a smirk.

“Aww shit. Let me find out you the black version of Donald Trump. These people will overthrow yo’ ass, and I will help them,” Uncle Kenny said.

Everybody laughed loudly as Uncle Storm frowned. After a moment or two, his smile finally came through. He shook his head then cleared his throat. “On some real shit though, this win is for Mama. She was already proud, but I know this moment would have made her even prouder.”

Everyone clapped in agreement. It was always implied that the Hendersons ran all of Nome because of the businesses and Henderson Village, but that shit was a reality now. Uncle Storm and Uncle Marcus would be officially running shit. I was proud and worried at the same fucking time. These people didn’t know what was in store, but I could only imagine.

Thankfully, only family and our closest friends were here for this celebration. The city council would be celebrating him tomorrow. Abney never got in the race, so he was a shoo-in. When we all voted and he was the only one listed on the ballot, we knew what the end result would be. We’d been turning up all day. We were at the family barn earlier. J. Paul had rolled through, and we all got good and lit… well, except Nesha, Tyeis, and Jess.

They were all pregnant. Nesha was due in another month or so and Tyeis was due not long after her. I didn’t know what we would do with all these newborns. There would be four of them since Ty and Decaurey were having twins. Jess was the only one that didn’t know the sex of her baby yet. So far, two boys and a girl would be gracing the Henderson family. I was pretty sure at least one of these lucky babies would have me as a godfather.

“Mama Henderson was definitely proud of all her babies,” Aunt Liv, Decaurey’s mom, said as everyone nodded in agreement.

Grandma had only been gone for a couple of months, but it felt like longer already. I missed her something fierce, as did everyone else. She was often in the business office, acting a damn fool with Aunt Tiff and Aunt Chas. One time, I’d literally walked in on her watching porn. She turned her phone to me and asked how that woman got her shit to “shoot out” like that. I was done. There was no way I was about to talk to my grandmother about women squirting or anything else related to having sex.

Philly sat next to me as Uncle Storm continued talking like he was giving a damn acceptance speech. None of us here gave a fuck so we’d started engaging in our own conversations. I looked over at Philly to see what he had to say. We worked together nearly all day every day. We’d gotten closer over the past few years. “What you got going tomorrow?”

“I have to go have a meeting with the trucking company about transporting our goods. Being that we’re our own distributors, we need to get a better rate. There’s no middleman. They are extremely proud of their business with the prices they charging us. Our business is probably keeping them afloat. Either they can go down on those prices or lose us altogether.”
