“Hell yeah. My umm… my mom will be there. I think she’ll be cool, but let me know if she isn’t. I need to have a talk with her anyway.”

Shit.“Okay.”

“I can hear the disappointment. Don’t give up on her yet. I think she sees just how deep this is already. She probably feels like she’s gonna lose her baby. That’s something that she’ll just have to get over though. I’m not letting you go to appease nobody.”

My cheeks heated up again. My man. Shit!I was on the verge of saying,Damn, I love you.Nate was every woman’s dream. Before I could respond, a call came in, interrupting our conversation. It was my mother. “Nate, what are you doing?”

“I’m at home, chilling. You have to go?”

“I need to talk to my mama right quick. She’s calling. I’ll call you back as soon as I get off the phone with her.”

“A’ight, baby.”

I ended the call and immediately called her back. She answered on the first ring. “Kenya, umm… are you coming here?”

“Yes, ma’am. I was checking my mail. I should be leaving in an hour or so. Is everything okay?”

“Yes, but Arik is sitting on the porch waiting for you.”

“Call the police, Ma. I filed a restraining order against him.”

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely. I’ve already had a conversation with him. He should have said everything he needed to say then.”

“Okay. I’m going to ask him to leave. If he doesn’t, then I’ll call.”

“Mama, don’t open the door for him. While I don’t think he’s dangerous, you never know what someone will do out of desperation. He seems desperate to talk to me all of a sudden. I don’t like that. I’m going to head your way now.”

“Okay, baby.”

I ended the call and quickly grabbed my bag. I could check my mail later. My mama needed me. I wanted to call the police anyway. He knew better. I was more than sure he’d gotten a copy of the restraining order. Niggas always wanted to give their all when they knew they’d lost. That shit was toxic as hell. He was only doing this to get me back. If I were to give in, within a month tops, he would go back to his old behaviors.

I’d seen it time and time again in so many relationships. I didn’t have time for it. I’d never dipped back to an ex. Once a nigga fucked up with me, that was it. There was nothing he could do to entice me to take him back. I didn’t play those kinds of games.

When I got to my car, I called Nate. “Hey, baby,” he said as soon as he answered the call.

“Hey. Arik is at my mother’s house. I told her to call the police, but I’m going over there.”

“Promise me that if he’s still there, you won’t get out the car, Kenya. Wait for the police.”

“I will, but I’m so pissed. Like, how dare he? Suddenly, he has all this fucking time that he didn’t have when we were together. He was too busy giving it to another woman. But I’m supposed to forgive him for that shit and take him back? He got me fucked up.”

Nate was completely quiet as I ranted, letting me get everything out of me. Once I was finished talking, I honestly felt better… more at ease. Maybe I needed to get all that out. After it was quiet for a minute or so, he said, “How do you feel now?”

“Better. Thank you. I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to apologize. You think he saw us on the internet?”

“That’s possible. Plus, I don’t think I put my mama’s address on the damn restraining order. I think I only put my address and Taryn’s. Shit!”

“Can you update it?”

“I think so. I’ll have to call the police out to my mama’s house, I suppose. Nate?”

“What’s up, baby?”

“Why are you so damn perfect?”
