“That sounds nice,” Dylan said. And it did. “We can split up the drive tomorrow and take our time getting there. We’ll make frequent stops and just enjoy the scenery and each other.”

“I’d love that,” she said, sneaking him a kiss at the stoplight. “It’s been lonely driving from rodeo to rodeo all by myself.”

“Why isn’t one of your sisters with you?” He reached down and took two Cokes out of the small beverage cooler. His ribs didn’t thank him for that. Patting down his pockets, he fished out a bottle of ibuprofen and took two.

“Sometimes they are. Sometimes they’re together in the truck. Dolly’s usually on her phone anyway.”

“I missed you this week,” he said, reaching out to hold her hand.

“You saw me every day.” A cute blush flushed over her pink cheeks.

“Yeah, but I didn’t get to wrap your legs around my face and taste you until you came on my tongue.”

“Dylan,” she half-shrieked as she blushed crimson to the roots of her hair. “I’m going to run off the road if you keep saying things like that.” Dylan could see her nipples had hardened to little peaks through her thin cotton shirt.

“I want to make love to you all night long. I want to wake up in the morning with you in my arms and after another round of lovemaking, take a shower with you before we head out to a pancake breakfast.”

She gave a deep appreciative sigh. “That sounds like heaven. I can’t wait to spend the night with you like a normal couple. Just you and me.”

“You know what else I want?” he asked.

“I’ll pull this truck over if you don’t behave,” she warned.

It was tempting, but he knew his ribs couldn’t take having her in the cramped truck cabin. But he thought long and hard about it. Maybe if it wasn’t broad daylight, he reasoned. He decided to bring the conversation back from being seconds away from an indecent exposure charge from a state trooper.

“I want barbecue for dinner with a giant slice of peach pie for dessert.” Dylan could almost taste it.

“I know just the place for that in Last Stand,” she said.

“And let’s skip the bed-and breakfast. We can get a nice hotel room.”

“That sounds nice,” LeAnn said. “But I think I can do even better. There’s a retreat center on the Three Sisters Ranch that’s run by one of the Sullivan sisters. Janice said she had a room available for us. It’s got a hot tub, and it comes with breakfast the next morning.”

“Is it expensive?” he asked. “I don’t mean to be a cheapskate, but until I see how Lola is healing, I’ll need to be a little frugal with my winnings.”

“It’s their off-season. I booked it at a really good rate.”

Dylan straightened uncomfortably in his seat.

“You can get the hotel bill, the next time,” she said in a long-suffering tone.

He needed to work on being grateful for having someone like her in his life. “I like the idea of a next time. And yeah, it will be nice to soak in a hot tub.” He leaned over and kissed her. “Thank you.”

“There, that wasn’t so hard, was it?”

“It’ll be a lot harder tonight,” he promised, loving the slight blush on her cheek.

They drove awhile in silence. He was about to doze off when she spoke.

“So, I should tell you…Mick has been a dick lately,” LeAnn blurted out.

“What did that asshole do now? Do you want me to kick the shit out of him?”

“No, I want to kick the shit out of him,” she said. “But what good would that do?”

“It might make you feel better. It would make me feel better.”

“He’s not worth it,” she said, giving him a sidelong glance.
