Her father laughed. “Be that as it may, there are men far more dangerous than Donovan out there. I’ve always worried about you traveling. It’s going to be even harder now.”

Which was exactly what Carson had said. “I’ll take precautions,” she said. “I’m not going to stop living my life because of what happened.”

“I don’t expect that you will,” her father said. “Carson filled me in on everything. From the flight there and back, Roark and Griffin. You should be happy your boyfriend talked me out of taking matters into my own hands. I already had a call to William to look into things.”

Her father’s attorney. “There is no reason to look into anything. A lot of people got woken up and bothered and this will blow over. I’ll be apologizing again and again.”

“And you’ll stop doing that too,” her father said. “You did nothing wrong. That is what family and loved ones are for. Maybe Carson can go with you next weekend?”

She sighed. “We just fought about this,” she said.

“Cut him some slack,” her father said. “I’d rather he went with you than me hiring security to follow you around.”

“You wouldn’t,” she said, her jaw dropping.

“Wouldn’t I?”

Laine put her head back on the chair she was sitting in. Her father would do that. She was surprised he hadn’t done it before. That would be more annoying than anything else.

“Dad,” she said. “I don’t know how life got so complicated.”

“It’s always been complicated, Laine,” her father said. “You try not to make it so.”

It wasn’t until he said those words that she realized how right her father was.

“Does Mom know what is going on?”

“She does,” her father said. “Please call her next and let her know you’re fine. Maybe she can talk some sense into you.”

“No one has been able to do it before,” she said.

She hung up with her father a few minutes later and called her mother next.

“I was hoping you’d call me and not make me bug you and worry I was waking you up,” her mother said the minute she answered the phone.

“Sorry,” she said. “It’s been an eventful twenty-four hours. How much can change in that time.”

“That’s right,” her mother said. “We know that firsthand.”

She didn’t need the reminder. “I’m fine. Everything is fine. I wish Dad and Carson would relax.”

“They aren’t going to,” her mother said. “No more than me. When you love people, you worry and become protective.”

“Why did Dad call you?” she asked.

“Because you’re my daughter,” her mother said. “But he didn’t call until you were back on the island. He waited until he could tell me everything was fine. He’s been like that your whole life.”

Still putting her mother first and not worrying her. “I’m sorry anyone was worried.”

“You can’t control those things. Fill me in on what is going on.”

She told her mother everything, even down to Carson walking out on her and the tears.

“He’s not wrong to feel that way, Laine. Maybe you should find out more about why he does.”

“He told me,” she said.

“Do you think that is all there is to it? This is a guy that is normally laid back and calm like you.”
