“The cookie.”

“I suppose the crackers are staying?” he asked.

“You suggested them, you can eat them,” she said.

She wanted to smile but couldn’t even force one.

She barely had one bite of her cookie in her mouth when a doctor came in. She had no idea who he was looking for but hoped it was her.

“Dr. Mills?”

The three of them stood up. “Yes. I’m Dr. Mills.”

“Dr. Zion. Why don’t you follow me to Caleb’s room? I told him you were here and he asked to see you.”

“You’re good,” she whispered.

When they got behind the curtain, the three of them being allowed and squeezing in, her father was in bed and hooked up to machines, the hospital gown on, and her heart sank.

“I’m fine, Laine,” he said. “It’s not my heart and not a stroke.”

“Phew,” she said, letting out a breath.

“As Caleb said,” Dr. Zion said, “we’ve ruled out heart issues and a stroke. All those tests were fine. I’m waiting for the MRI results to come back. It’s possible with as active as your father is in his exercise regimen he injured himself and doesn’t realize.”

Which meant he could have injured his back but not felt it. As much as she hated that, she was relieved.

“I’d like Carson to see the results when they come in,” her father said. “He’s a radiologist and family.”

Dr. Zion didn’t look as if he was going to argue, just nodding his head. “It could be an hour or more before they are read.”

“Or they can be sent right to you and Carson can read them,” her father said rather firmly.

Dr. Zion looked at her father. She knew her father was a major donor of this hospital and was positive the attending physician was aware of that.

“I’ll see what I can do.”

“Dad,” she said.

“Don’t give me a hard time,” her father said. “I don’t want to be here any longer than you do. I told Mario I was fine.”

“If you can’t feel your left hand, you’re not fine,” Carson said. “Better safe than sorry.”

“I’m going to have three people lecturing me now?” her father asked. “Maybe I shouldn’t have said you could see the results.”

She couldn’t believe her father could joke like this.

“You’re about as good of a patient as your daughter,” he said.

She was shocked those words came out of his mouth but then realized her parents would assume it had to do with her finger.

A little over three months ago she met the guy she was in love with and now was going to have twins. Amazing.

“She doesn’t get all her traits from me,” her mother said.

“Only the good ones,” her father said.

Her mother moved over and put her hand on her father’s. It just killed her to see this and know what he’d thrown away.
