“Congratulations,” Madelyn said, moving forward and hugging her. “I’m so excited. We need to know everything.”

“Yeah,” Caleb said. “Like when is the ring coming.”

“Dad! Don’t put Carson on the spot. You should be the first to know marriage doesn’t make a family.”

“Laine is right, Caleb. Put a cork in it. Our daughter does things her way and always has. Let’s just be happy we are going to be grandparents.”

“Maybe one of them will want to be involved in my business,” Caleb said. “It’s the medical field too.”

“If one of these two isn’t interested, we could always try for more,” Carson said.

“Let’s get through these two first,” she said, laughing. “Then we’ll talk about it.”

“Fair enough.”

She ran over and gave him a big kiss. Mario wheeled a cart in. “Sounds like a celebration is in order. Dessert before dinner has always been Ms. Laine’s choice.”

“You’re the best, Mario.”

Carson looked around this room and as crazy as Laine thought her upbringing was, he felt she was pretty darn lucky.

EPILOGUE

Two Weeks Later

“I’msurprised you wanted to stay in tonight,” Carson said to her on New Year’s Eve. “I figured you to be a party girl.”

“Not this year,” she said. “I just want to relax with you. The end of one year, the start of another.”

“The holidays worked out well,” he said. “I’m glad that your parents were able to visit.”

She was thrilled when her father, mother and Stewart drove to Boston and then flew over with Egan. She knew her father wasn’t happy that he might need help getting into the helicopter, but Egan made sure they had a ramp to get her father up and in it on his own.

Everyone stayed at The Bond Retreat and enjoyed a few days of pampering.

Her parents got to meet Carson’s parents and talk of the babies on the way was the biggest topic. Carson’s parents were thrilled about the baby news even though he was worried his mother would ask about marriage.

In her mind, her father got there first.

As her mother said, she did things her way and that piece of paper didn’t matter all that much to her.

They had more important things to plan or worry about. Like where to live. Her place was the perfect location but not the size. Carson’s was a good size but not the location.

It’d work out the way it would, she told herself.

“That’s right,” he said. “And since we are just sitting here relaxing and you’re already yawning, I think you might not make it until the stroke of midnight.”

“Maybe not,” she said.

“Let’s go over our list and see all the things we knocked off of it since we’ve been together.”

“Oh,” she said, rubbing her hands together. “Fun.”

She pulled her iPad out and went through her list, laughing at it all. Even the pregnancy got crossed off. No babies yet since they weren’t here, but they would be.

She had to admit she had more fun in the past several months with Carson than she ever had with anyone else in her life.

“We need to check my list out now,” he said.
