“How about Ms. Pacman?” she asked. “I’m not a big video game person, but I think I can handle eating dots.”

“Sure,” he said. “That will take up the rest of our tokens.”

“Perfect,” she said. “Then we can go get some real food to eat.”

They played some more games and then went to his car. “What are you in the mood to eat?”

“I want big greasy and messy food,” she said.

He’d been thinking of going to Duke’s, but she wouldn’t get what she wanted there. That could be another night.

“How about McKay’s?” he asked. “They’ve got great pub food.”

It was a place he and Hudson went often.

“I’ve been there,” she said. “They had street tacos once on the menu and it was awesome. It was just a special.”

“Maybe it will be our lucky night and it will be there again,” he said.

He drove the few miles to the pub and parked. A Saturday at five wasn’t that busy yet. It was early for many, but there were a lot of cars in the lot, just not as many as when he’d come later at night.

They walked in and then were seated quickly and ordered drinks. She got wine. He got a beer.

He knew they couldn’t linger here too long and take up space, but he didn’t want this date to end early either.

“Ohhhh,” she said. “They’ve got tacos on the menu.”

He picked it up and looked. He was here enough that he knew what he was getting, but he saw the tacos. “There you go,” he said. “Guess it’s your lucky night.”

“So far it seems to be a fairly lucky day too,” she said.

Their drinks were brought out and they ordered their food. “Do you normally come here alone? I bet you’re not the type that likes to do things alone.”

“Not really,” he said. He realized that he didn’t go out to eat alone. Not sit at a table. He didn’t go to a bar alone either.

“I bet you have a lot of cousins you could call up to meet you here.”

He snorted. “I do. Or I did. They are all hooking up now. The last time I came here, now that I think of it, was the day I closed on my house. Hudson was dating Delaney. Our cousin Roark, who did the closing on my house, stayed the weekend and helped me move. We came here for drinks and food. Roark met his fiancée that night.”

“The way you just blushed tells me that maybe it wasn’t just Roark that met someone that night.”

He didn’t know why he started this conversation. “No,” he said. “There were us three and Chelsea and two of her friends. Hudson left to go home and one of their friends went back to the hotel. They were visiting that weekend.”

“Chelsea ended up with Roark and you with the other girl. It’s fine, Carson. You could say it’s a small island.”

“I don’t think I’m as bad as you might hear.”

At least he hoped not.

The waitress had good timing and they placed their orders. Laine got her tacos and a side order of fries. He found it funny she was going to show him messy food but it was what she asked for tonight.

“I’m sure you don’t make a habit of picking women up and taking them home. At least not often. You do work a lot and you just admitted you don’t go out alone and most of your family is with significant others.”

She was still grinning at him. So much for that topic to drop.

“Not as much as I used to,” he said. Might as well be honest.

The truth was, that was the last one-night stand he’d had, but he wouldn’t phrase it that way.
